Like say your wife was evangelical or mormon or catholic or whatever and was actively involved in it, but you were basically an atheist. Would you be okay with your kids getting indoctrinated with religious shit?

Don't you think there are positive secondary effects of religion on a child, like its promotion of discipline, community service, playing nice with others, more opportunities for socializing, lifelong networking opportunities, etc.? You could always just try to undermine the theological bullshit.

Agreed, but what about risk of backfiring? Remember: tons of porn stars out there grew up in strict religious households.

Tons of normal people who are now not very religious also grew up in religious households. And tons of now religious people grew up in not religious households. Obviously it probably raises the chance that your kids will wind up religious if they grow up in a religious home though.

P.S. don't change the hypo. I'm not talking "strict" religious household, just religious enough to go weekly. Not saying you would home school your kids so they aren't exposed to the world or some crazy ass shit like that.

Fair.

I've considered this thought before. Doesn't sound bad, especially if your wife handles it all, and she doesn't expect you to go to church. You just have to make sure your kid manages to successfully transition out of the theological trappings without noticing that his moral education was tied to said trappings.

i'd rather try to teach the child to be good for the right reasons rather than letting them get indoctrinated. discipline etc. is great, but it's hardly unique to religion. not sure the religious social scene is a huge factor in cities.

It's one way to get there. Obviously you can get the other ways, too. This is not about preferences. This is about whether you WOULD do it, or whether you would refuse to marry and/or divorce someone who would demand to have your kids raised in her church.

Let them go to Church if they wanted and not overtly undermine their beliefs if they have them unless they ask me.

"if they wanted"... kids just do what they are told. no toddler is going to refuse to go to church. and then once they are going they will get indoctrinated and consider themselves a member of that religion. it won't be until their teens or even early 20s until they start questioning it.

even if you thought religion was harmful to the child's upbringing? you would sacrifice your kids for your wife's happiness?

or i'm guessing you just don't think it's that big of a deal in general

I would consider Catholic school for the character building and stories it brings. Lots of cool people went to Catholic school. Obviously, I wouldn't let my child believe that religious stuff tho.

Pretty sure this will be me in my future. I don't see a problem with the kid getting some sort of moral reinforcement outside the home, and it's good to have a working knowledge of the bible whether you believe It or not. I think if you raise an otherwise smart and thoughtful kid, even if they end up religious, they won't be young earth mouth breathers or anything.

Yes. As long as the church/synagogue/mosque is relatively modern and not too radical or political, there are huge benefits to being part of a ready-made and mutually supportive community.

A ton of research backs this up, too.
