He presented a paper on stop, question, and frisk, and I asked what were some of the points that he made for and against it and he basically said he was for it because criminals won't carry guns if they know we will frisk them. His response was devoid of critical thought. I told him I think gang members and guys who have prior convictions for carrying a gun should be frisked, as well as ppl we may suspect have committed, are committing, or will commit a violent act. We shouldn't frisk the kid who grew up in the ghetto who is trying hard to do well in school, has no priors, just because he was jaywalking. I think it is bullshit.
Last night the piece of shit went on a rant about how he think it is effective police work to arrest homeless ppl for carrying a shopping cart. I disagreed with him and the conversation was heated. |

What the public does not know is that most cops don't wake up hoping they will get into a shooting. Most, especially in my department don't want to even think about it, including myself. One of the detectives wife in my department is a cop and she killed someone and the investigation took 2 years. She was cleared but those two years took something away from her soul. |

I've only had one negative experience with a paramedic. He was in the passenger side of a car and the car he was in was double parked for a while in a high narcotics prone street. I approached the passengers side with my flashlight to see the dashboard and their hands. The guy was fuming and he literally got out of his carry to curse me out. Most cops would have pulled their gun out or even arrested him for obstructing government administration. I did neither and issued him a criminal court summonses.
As for tickets, most cops won't admit this, but there is a quote in place in some departments. It is downright sickening and counterproductive to building position relationships with the community. |

Daniel Pantaleo was an officer assigned to the department's anti-crime unit which has a quota to make certain number of arrest per month, even if it means arresting Garner for selling untaxed cig's. He is doing his job, however, the cop is pressured by his Sergeants to make the arrest to help the Captain and Commanding Officer look good as to how they are addressing quality of life offenses in the area when they are questions about it in the big monthly comp stat meetings.
Arresting Garner was foolish considering the amount of times he had already been arrested for the same thing.
Now I will get into the important part...Pantaleo did NOT put Garner in a chokehold. A chokehold requires pressure to the windpipe. It was a headlock! There was no evidence of damage to Garner's windpipe. He was a ticking timebomb given his medical conditions such as heart disease, obesity, and asthma. Garner knew he had asthma. He knew how the arrest processing procedures work. He was a veteran of the criminal justice system. He knew if he resisted that physical force would be used to contain him. He decided his fate that night. Now, when he was yelling he can't breathe, the cop should have let go of him but it is hard to do considering that he was the guy controlling Garner while the others attempted to cuff him up. When shit hits the fan, it is easy to Monday morning quarterback the shit. |

Date: December 15th, 2014 8:34 PM Author: Cerebral theater stage i know it's a shit job man. i used to be a prosecutor and i hated the large majority of the cops i dealt with in various capacities. so many of these fuckers would outright lie and screw around for no fucking reason. and they were insanely indignant and whiny if their conduct was ever put at issue. this was a large urban department like yours where higher IQs are actively screened against by hiring in most cases.
but i know plenty of good ones who made something of it or found ways to make the job tolerable. you've already invested this much time and energy, so may as well ride it out until you start to get something better from it or you truly have no other option but to quit. i would just encourage you to avoid the typical trap of becoming a drunk or abusive prick to blow off the mental toll of the job. that shit works short term, of course, but eventually it'll eat you up and you'll either be forced off the department in bad shape or you won't want to have any kind of life moving forward. seemed like the job burned them out worse when they embraced the awfulness of it. |

As for myself, when I engage with the law abiding public, the encounter is always positive for the most part. It is only the legit criminals who deal drugs, gang members, and other deviants who dislike me because of the uniform.
I'm going to see how things unfold in the next few months. I'm told things will get better by the older guys once I hit patrol. I'm on foot now. After three years I can apply for a specialized unit and details, not to mention I would be eligible to take the Sergeant's test.
I've never been the abusive type or one to lash out at people violently. I usually write about things that bother me, read insightful philosophy/quotes, and surround myself with non-cops on my off days who do positive pro-active activities with their lives.
Thanks again for your insight brother. It helps to have someone who understands my perspective and can offer some good advice. I needed to hear these things. |

I have a friend who was a cop for the Dallas PD and he was pretty chill. Generally wouldn't harass people over minor stuff like pot, although some of the other cops at his precinct would. Believe me, I used to think the same way and immediately dislike someone for being a cop but not all of them are awful. |

Arresting guys who only have 1 suspension on their license from years ago for not paying 1 stupid traffic summonses, while his two little girls and wife are on the scene.
Backstabbing, rumors, racial and ethnic intolerance, lack of culture, general lack of education, poor communication skills, etc.
Giving summonses to people for "spitting" on the sidewalk. Running after guys for having an open contain of alcohol.
Looking at people as overtime.
If you break their bullshit wall of unethical behavior, they'll put you on one of the most violent blocks by yourself for your entire tour as punishment so you can "learn your lesson."
