Still the best comedy of all time imo
It actually sucks in retrospect till ssn 3, but still better than anything ever made
If you’re just drilling the episodes mid 5 to end of show is just superbly made esp irt NYC crew storyline

Season 6 is actually shit on way too much it’s 180
The color tone changes throughout the season and there’s a cinematic shift after the ny crew meeting that is so genius and subtle

The last two seasons are criminally underrated. So is season 4, but not to the same extent. The real time reception of those seasons just proves how massive the show got and how much the culture implicitly already realized what a culture-shifting/defining achievement it was, so the bar was placed impossibly high. For me on rewatch the biggest realization of 5 and 6 was that AJ is phenomenal and Robert Iler did an amazing job. As a 20-something I could appreciate the old people bits with Livia, Junior, Paulie’s mom et al. but they do hit harder now. But I can’t believe how excellent the AJ stuff is and how predictive and relevant it is today. They were calling the entire incel/NEET crisis perfectly years before the iPhone and social media had even happened. Such a genius show.

AJ got a ton of quality ass though. he's a retarded megaloser in the show but he did ok for himself on that front. def not incel territory.

No dude that’s just how boomers tastes were in the late 90s. The Sopranos house is decorated identically to my in-laws it’s hilarious. They are definitely supposed to be understood as these UMC LARPers that their UMC neighbors and classmates all recognize as interlopers, but defer to because of their rational fear of violence and the ability of capitalism and possession of the trappings of their social class to smooth things over socially, eg conversations with the Cusamanos that all revolve around restaurants, golf, vacations and college admissions. It’s very intentionally playing with Gatsby except the mafia dons’ desire is just to blend in with the wealthiest set of schlubs. That’s the whole fundamental joke and premise of the show, which is the same reason that it’s a hilarious premise/pitch to think of a mafia boss who sees a shrink and takes Prozac like he’s some faceless corporate stooge. And all of that is made even better by the fact that these characters are based on a smattering of actually mobsters in Jersey and Philly who really did go to shrinks, have names like Big Pussy and whose moms plotted to kill them.

the saddest thing about the sopranos is that the over-arching theme is about the decline of america generally, yet at the time it was made american seems like an absolute utopia comparatively.
lots of the 90s era film and tv was about america's decline. i think the only reason we don't make these anymore is that we've given up hope on things changing. the ending of the sopranos was supposed to be hopeful. back in the 90s there was still a feeling like we could turn things around.
