If you want to live somewhere where you can walk outside your door to go out, commute to work without extra hassle, but want to save a little money, either:
(a) live just south of soho (so you can easily go out in soho whenever you want) but on the cusp of chinatown so it's a bit cheaper (think Hester and Mulberry-ish), and take the NQR uptown; or
(b) live far east in the east village such as on Avenue A and 11th or 12th streets so you have access to the east village/alphabet city bars (prices drop dramatically east of 2nd avenue in the east village area, especially when you hit the lettered streets). Here you would either walk to Union Square (this is a long walk), or take the L to Union Sq and transfer.
Don't listen to anything any of these unsociable cheaps advocate. Good luck meeting anyone who doesnt think you are a total loser living in Harlem like a cheap idiot.
EDIT: In all likelihood you will be going out no more than twice a week or you will quickly be fired.
EDIT 2: Don't live east of Avenue B or your safety may be compromised. |

One of my closest friends just signed a lease there and it's significantly less expensive than the surrounding Tribeca or Soho. Priced much more like financial district, except without being in the middle of nowhere.
(b) 1st Ave and Ave A are TOTALLY FINE. Whether you want to quibble about Ave B is up to you, but there is certainly no danger from the first two, and again, priced much more like the financial district. |

Even if you look in Harlem, if you pick the first apartment you see, you're likely overpaying for what the area's worth unless you shop around. |
