trust me you will never know WTF you are doing if you just start out. People do it straight out of law school, sure, but if you ever do anything slightly complicated you will be lost. Being a good writer or good exam taker will not help you when you don't even know how to get a lawsuit started, what kind of motion to file, the fact that there are specific rules related to your case in the state code, etc. Law school simply doesn't prepare most people for IRL practice.

Take the shitlaw, do it for a couple years, then go solo.

Is there nowhere that he can access information about these things? You start a lawsuit by filing a complaint. And everyone knows what a motion to dismiss or suppress are.

Also, I think you meant to write: law school doesn't prepare anyone for practice.

you may be able to handle simple stuff like court appointed criminal and family law stuff. I did stuff like that in a clinic during law school (albeit supervised), and it wasn't too bad. But a lot of more complicated stuff will be really hard for someone who has no idea what they are doing. Law school simply doesn't prepare you for it.

It's been done before by new law grads, I'll admit that, but even after 9 months at my firm I am only now starting to understand a lot of stuff, and that is with heavy hand-holding.

Can you be a little more specific about what complicated stuff means?

What's fucked up is that law school could easily teach its students all of this, rather than how to write academic papers about equal protection issues that never bothered anyone.

well, for instance, I do a little wills/estates/probate stuff as part of my job (I do mostly business transaction and some litigation). I took every wills and family law class that my law school offered, yet the simple stuff like opening a probate, seeing how statute changes affects wills, what motion to file in what situation (and there are tons of different motions that we have filed that I never heard of before), how to close the estate, etc, I had no clue what to do. Certainly never learned it in law school.

Another, more simple example- my firm gave me some low-level referral to help some guy with massive credit card debt. I worked out a deal and a payment schedule with the opposing counsel representing the bank, and I actually got exactly what my client wanted. Win. At that point, I was like who does my client pay every month? How can we be sure when my client pays in full that the matter is closed? Stuff like that, I had no idea and had to ask people at my firm.

And the thing is, kids from the TTTT and unaccredited law schools that I know did shit like this in their law school classes.

You may as well see if you can get some experience in SHITlaw. It's better to learn how to practice law when someone else is paying you than when you need to support yourself with it.

do shitlaw. agreed on what the previous poster said about the real world being a lot more difficult. it's true. organization, filing motions timely, knowing what motions to file, learning the state rules, local rules, etc. etc. practicing law is so much different than law school it's insane that law schools do not have a class which is geared toward the practice of law. i guess even if they did though, that class would probably be completely different than the actual practice anyway.
