True deterrence means being tough on the causes of crime (poverty, illiteracy, poor health, etc.). Punishment is just revenge: primitive, irrational, barbaric. Incapacitation is a horrible thing to do to someone else. It takes away their humanity. |

these motherfuckers now get cable tv in their cells, 3 meals a day, have no bills, get free medical care, can go to school, get to workout in the prison yard, many have access to candy/honey buns/chips/cell phones/alcohol/street drugs, and sometimes get to have sex with prison guards of the opposite sex. |

If we focused more on rehabilitation, they would learn to be functioning members of society instead. |
