Black Guy, in undergrad, currently applying to law school. Still havent gotten decisions from HYS, but swept the rest of the T14 so far. Honestly, anything below HYS wasnt part of my original plans, but its lookin like CCN may end up being my highest ranked options...but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that ITE.

Advice? Thanks

Edit: Havent gotten anything bigger than half rides from lower T14s. Biglaw ambitions, was really looking forward to the HYS no-grades, but not sure whether my grades will matter as a ccn urm anyway

You will get $ at CCN. I am not URM, but I got aprx. 30k from Chicago, and CLS gave a tiny bit more to match and go beyond it. There was none from NYU, though. I think they had a rough year with their investments when I applied, last cycle.

I can tell you that of the 2Ls with whom I have spoken, the general consensus is that if you are median or above, you have an OK shot at BigLaw ITE. Top 1/3 and above has a very good shot. From 1/3 to median still has an OK shot. Below median did not do too well. I know quite a few 2Ls that have BigLaw, though.

There is still a ton of URM 1L BigLaw recruiting, here. It didn't seem to slow down that much.

Sure, np. I wouldn't go making assumptions like that, by the way. If you have the wrong attitude, you won't do well. Sorry that I can't give better URM stats. I can say that firms do come here and host events for 'networking purposes--' most of them are for the entire student body, but some of them have been specifically for 'diversity.' So, they still have interest in this, I am taking it.

I don't know too many 2L URMS, but I know quite a few 1L URMS here, CLS, who have gotten 1L SA gigs, if that serves as any indication. (URM=AA and Latinos)

Edit: SA 1L gigs in BigLaw; same pay as 2L SAs; there are still a lot of diversity initiative programs, that sort of thing.

IDK how they did, to be honest. One of the girls I know did go to HYP, if that is any indication. I didn't have class with her, so I can't tell how well she knew her stuff.

A buddy of mine is Latino, and he usually seems pretty good about knowing the concepts. I would imagine he landed somewhere around top 1/3. He is working in a smaller market this summer, though.

Besides knowing those two, I don't have any ideas about the others. Just general rumors you hear, that is all. I still know the firms are recruiting for that sort of stuff, so I am assuming more have been hired under these programs--we have a website that posts different job openings, and quite a few firms still have 1L summer diversity program hiring.

I know more than a handful of URMs at HYS who have 1L SA offers and none through diversity programs. Three were Ivy UG and the other four weren't. Not sure of grades although one is going to a V5 so I'm sure his grades were very good.

Otherwise, offers I know of were from V15-V40 range.

Timeline is the same as for other 1Ls. Send your stuff December 1 or after finals. No worries if you send after finals, despite what batshit crazy 1Ls might tell you. A lot of the jobs came from 1L OCI and the opportunities were posted on Symplicity. If you do SEO, you'll have a mountain of offers. Those I know who did SEO had many more biglaw interviews than others.

Good luck!

You can send off your resume/cover letter post-Dec 1st (NALP guidelines).

Firms don't really start hiring until after New Yrs. If you do public interest stuff, some of them hire pretty soon after Dec, but more along the lines of after New Yrs, too. Lining up your interviews during your break is ideal.

But, most people get jobs, I wold guess, starting in Feb. A bulk of the interviewing is in Jan, though, and quite a bit in Feb., too. At this point, it seems to be wrapping up pretty much.

Sure. I got my first offer, if I remember correctly, probably the second week in Jan. This was pretty early, and it was PI stuff. I got a few firm offers, but they were abroad and, thus, didn't pay market at all. I got some more PI stuff after that, and I didn't completely settle on what I wanted until a few weeks ago, I would estimate (gov job). So, all in, it was about a three-moth process for me, from when I started mailing stuff in Dec to interviewing in Jan to deciding finally in Feb. I think that is pretty typical, but I do know people who had jobs before exams (mid-Dec), and I know some people still without jobs (they will get something--they are just holding out for something 'better,' but they have offers).

So, at some point the biglaw firm asks for your Fall grades before they make their final decision, right? Is that on a firm-by-firm basis or something?

It depends on the firm. I basically e-mailed about 150 firms with my cover letter and resume in the areas I liked/had connections. I would estimate 90% of the firms in America told me they had no summer program being offered. The ones that did get back to me asked for my grades, and I interviewed with a couple of them after submitting my grades. No bites. The firms abroad did not ask for my grades, and they made decisions based on interviews. I got offers at probably about 50% of them, but not at the ones that I really wanted (the ones that paid big $).

So, I guess how to take it is that the American firms will ask, but the firms abroad will not ask.
