i guess it was a little misleading to say "IB". I just say that to people who prob don't know the differences of working in a bb bank. i did structured products.

not directly, but it helps having some contacts in the industry, and a general knowledge of finance, plus organizational skills.

Thank you.

Oh the good years...I missed my time it seems.

Your path is exactly what I wanted to do. I wouldn't mind being a lawyer, but I wanted LS to serve mores as a credential for IB.

i'm not really considered in-house counsel for my position. the in-house guys deal more with compliance issues at my firm and manage relationships with different regulatory bodies regarding the operation of the company rather than dealing with the portfolio companies.

in my position, a legal background is helpful because i'm quarterbacking the exits we make from our investments, whether through IPO, m&a or straight up sales, but i don't really do much of the actual legal work -- instead i instruct our outside lawyers, bankers and other service providers.

how much $ do you make?

what are my odds of getting into PE as a non-target who got a job in a good m&a group? i know a lot of the megafunds are still prestige-whores even 2 years later.

i make more than my friends from my year who've stuck around in big law, but it really fluctuates based on how profitable we are of course.

i don't think going to a non-target will hurt you if you've done a good job in a good group. the investment work is still not that complicated. they just care if you can crank.

What are the bios of junior in-house people like (School/grades/previous work experience)?

Are you stuck doing compliance and regulatory work at PE firms if you take this kind of job after a couple of years at big law?

all of the lawyers are from top schools and top firms. juniors usually come in with 2-4 years of experience in a related practice area.

no, depending on the size of the PE firm, there's a lot of different roles lawyers can play. there's the compliance/regulatory people, the fund formation/tax doods, and investment transactions. usually, you take up these roles depending on whether you did related work at a firm.

Did you (and do most) get this job through a headhunter or through a friend/contact?

How are your coinvestment options?

What is the vesting on your carry?

What were the exit options for people in your banking associate class and do you think having a law degree helped you? Banking associate to PE is very rare.
