Who do you mean by "people like this"?
They are objecting to their #1 ranked school--which is really hard to get into even if you move to the neighborhood to attend, which many of them do--having 25% of its class purposefully set aside for kids performing below grade level.
Just to be clear, because NYC can't just do bus kids in because of race, and because this is a fancy neighborhood, they are actually targeting dumb kids so they can increase the number of minorities. That is insanely fucked.

"I'm using have in quotes because they don't actually have to leave and can simply have their kids go to school with other kids in the same school system"
Translation: they should have to have their kids go to shitty, dangerous schools or leave to the burbs because I don't like urbanites.
"Like everything in life, it's a matter of tradeoffs and you can't expect to have the best of everything."
They have tradeoffs even without this. These people are raising kids in an expensive apartment. Personally, I can't imagine doing that.

This is nonsensical and you’re contradicting yourself. You’re saying that to avoid shit like this happening, pay up for a wealthy neighborhood. When presented with the fact that this is indeed a wealthy neighborhood where people paid up to avoid shit like his happening, you said “well they should’ve seen it because it’s still all part of the board of ed system!”
Well under this logic, then it’s not meaningful at all to spend millions in any wealthy neighborhood in NYC because it’s all within the same public school system. Same could be said for any large city with huge public school system and great disparity btwn rich and poor neighborhoods.
And no, school zones do not change “all the time.” It used to be extremely difficult for such proposals to pass because these proposals were considered by the local school boards but the state is now more involved due to diversity concerns. Since people make real estate decisions based solely on schools and property values are tied to schools, everyone is obviously upset. Similar proposals in Chelsea, the village and tribeca (other wealthy neighborhoods) have failed in the past but will prob pass in the future.

I never used the word "neighborhood" or suggested "paying up" to live in them. that is the key difference. and even if they don't rezone the schools, they can just do what they're doing now and break down the neighborhood barriers. "integrating" schools is not a new concept and yea, they should have seen it coming.
is it the state of new york and not the city DOE driving these changes?

These people can afford to send their kids to private school. However, they paid a premium (of at least $500k+) specifically to buy into a neighborhood with good public schools. They’re not expecting something for nothing. Changing the rules means the entire reason they live there is now defeated.
I don’t think you understand how integrating schools work in urban environments. First, it’s virtually impossible to completely avoid being somewhat close to minorities, esp in a place as compact as MFH. You’re talking about the projects being next to $2-3m apartments. Second, it doesn’t matter even if you buy in the richest, whitest neighborhood you can find. They will bus poor kids in if they can’t get enough minorities close by, but they don’t resort to that unless they have to because it’s more disruptive and costly. But either way, rest assured, all public schools will become diverse sooner or later.
So this is a bait and switch and youre wrong that these parents didn’t pay enough to be in a good school district. They did. I’m not touching the issue whether these parents are hypocrite libs who pretend to be diverse since that’s a separate issue.

Clearly you have no idea about MFH neighborhoods or NYC board of ed issues. There aren’t that many neighborhoods in MFH with good public schools and the UWS is known to be a family friendly neighborhood that isn’t particularly exciting or hip. They’re not living there for the nightlife. Yes they are indeed buying for the schools.
“All the same school system” is a ridiculous argument to make. You’re effectively saying that it doesn’t matter if you pay $10m to live on park ave, you’re in the same system as schools in the south Bronx. Basically you’re saying it’s completely futile for anybody in a large urban school system to expect to buy their way into a decent public school, which is not the case. In fact, the only way to get into a decent public school is to buy/rent your way in through expensive housing away from the ghettos.
I live in LA now and people paying millions to live in Manhattan beach and the palisades are in the same school system as Compton. You’re telling me if they start bussing in minorities or rezoning these districts, “they should’ve seen it coming”? Why did they pay so much in the first place? That’s just not how large public school systems work. Traditionally, local school boards and parents held all the power and say within each district. This has changed as of late as cities and counties and states have gotten more and more involved with diversity efforts, but people couldn’t have seen this happening when they moved in when their kid was 1 year old.

"Basically you’re saying it’s completely futile for anybody in a large urban school system to expect to buy their way into a decent public school, which is not the case."
actual it 100% is the case. see for example, what is happening here. clearly, if you want to guarantee a good school in NYC, you need to go private. that has been stated on this board probably a few hundred thousand times and again this particular instance is proving it to be correct.
LA is an absolute hellhole and you yes are taking a risk by planning on sending kids to public schools there. it's obvious by your responses in this thread you're just trolling for your own life choices like you always do.

"Some parents objected to a proposal to require each of the 17 local middle schools to reserve a quarter of its seats for students scoring below grade level on state English and math exams."
FUCKING LOL. So to make the school more "diverse" it's not enough to grant a bonus to "diverse" students-- we have to outright have a quota for low performing students.
So, would it be viable to intentionally tank the test to get one of those coveted quota spots? Assuming there's no other consequence for doing poorly, might be CR.

I sometimes wonder about the basic humanity of libs.
From a strict utilitarian perspective, it might indeed maximize overall utility if the "underperforming students" being quota'd here are spread throughout the system rather than concentrated in one school-- those students who get out benefit greatly and the students at the non-dysfunctional school are hurt, but not that badly.
Expecting parents to go along with this is, of course, crazy because the only parents they care about is their own. In theory, we could maximize utility by forcibly taking the spare kidneys/lungs of healthy children and providing them to kids who need replacements. Most parents wouldn't go for that either

“You're talking about telling an 11-year-old, 'You worked your butt off and you didn't get that, what you needed and wanted.' You're telling them 'You're going to go to a school that is not going to educate you in the same way that you've been educated. Life sucks!' Is that what the DOE [Department of Education] wants to say?" one parent said at the meeting.
Sounds like exactly the right message to me.

What fraction of the 750k+ HHI families in MFH send their kids to private middle/high schools vs public?
In other words is it mainly the 250-750k HHI families dealing with the issues described here

Rent for a 2br is 5,000-6,500 in the neighborhood this article concerns.
Private school tuition is 40k a year. So 3,300 a month.
Believe me, at 500k HHI you are doing OK and continuing to save for retirement as you should be to maintain your lifestyle, but hardly balling out. And that's before baby #2 and another 3,000 a month in nanny or daycare.

It's not that anyone hates the UMC, though people do give them plenty of shit about whining about not being able to get by on $200k+ HHI. It's more that no one gives a fuck about them. They get raped on taxes, but don't pay enough city tax compared to hedge fund billionaires for city hall to feel they have to protect them. This is a problem you see in NJ and CT too, were they were not going to make their budgets based on literally 1 or 2 people moving out of state. (See NJ/David Tepper, and 100 people in CT pay $400 million worth of income tax; see http://www.governing.com/topics/finance/gov-connecticut-richest-state-fiscal-problems.html).
So they need the rich to pay the taxes, and they need the poor to show up and vote. (MFH is only 1.3 million of the city's 8 million people.) To appease the poor, they throw them a bunch of benefits that sound good on paper, but that aren't even that great in reality: NYCHA housing, public union jobs for the city (and MTA), "universal" pre-k, head start, free breakfast and lunch in school, energy assistance for heating oil, medicaid, WIC.
And the problem is there is never a check on this because there is not a serious threat that republicans could ever come in and "clean house."
