What would cause you to evaluate them positively, based on their reading selection? Negatively?

never thought about this in those terms. to be honest i rarely see other people's bookshelves, and when i do, i usually just look for stuff that might be interesting to me and don't care about what the contents of the shelf say about the person

If a person has no bookshelves/visible books in his/her house whatsoever (more common than you'd think), it's a definite black mark

What about too many books? Are there certain books or types of books that you would view negatively?

Viewed negatively:

- Comics

- Printed porn kept in visible locations (unless this is a bachelor pad)

- Romance novels or other trashy pulpy fiction

- Shitty pop culture magazines

There's no such thing as too many books as long as the residence isn't made slovenly by them

Books are TTT. This is the fucking 21st Century. I read on screens.

Most of the people I know who have no bookshelves read nothing whatsoever. You're in the enlightened minority.

It's code.

The books tell you that I'm smart enough to know that books represent the proposition that I'm smart.

It's an indication that you might actually read something in this life.

Most people who have no books visible anywhere don't read jack shit. Joe 6 Pack has probably never finished an entire book in his lifetime aside from "See Spot Run".
