Well, You Guys Have Scared the Shit Out of Me

Date: April 23rd, 2007 9:19 PM Author: Vibrant Theater Stage I'm a 0L awaiting the Fall 2007 class. I've been lurking on this board for about three years now, occasionally reading through student and practitioner testimonials about their experiences. Especially when it comes to life in the world of BIGLAW or pretty much any day-to-day practice outside of academia or government, the portrayals have been uniformly bleak.
Other than the occasional prestige whore who actually relishes in the stressful and oftentimes abusive lifestyle, I've not heard anything good about life after law school. It just seems to be nothing but long hours of excruciatingly dull work that is never appreciated, at the expense of the rest of one's life. I've read how attorneys as a profession have one of the highest rates of depression in the country, high rates of drug and alcohol abuse, divorce, and even suicide. And for what, money that you have no time to really spend?
So, I've begun to think I've made a mistake. I applied and was accepted into a T14 school, but had to defer for a couple of years. I was certain going to law school was what I wanted to do, but having spent three years reconsidering I'm no longer sure.
Are there any newly minted attorneys out there who actually *enjoy* what they're doing, as opposed to tolerating their jobs long enough to pay off their loans? If there are, could you discuss some of what it is you do and what you enjoy about your work? |

If you care about having free time, there are plenty of jobs you can get with your degree that are relatively high-paying for the time you put in. They also can be relatively interesting. Conclusion. The both enjoy what they do, so I assume that I will too.
