Pensive, your judgment begins {Jigsaw}

You are sitting in front of a computer in a small, sterile room. Attached to your left arm is an elaborate metal cast with eight vials of liquid arrayed in a straight line. Each vial is illuminated by a green LED and although the cast obscures the points where the vials come into contact with your skin, you do notice that these areas are very sore. Although you are unsure, several wires running from the cast to the computer give you the distinct impression that it would be a bad idea to attempt an escape. The computer has an instance of Firefox running with 23 tabbed XOXO threads, and you attempt to click the new message button to post: "Pensive: trapped by Jigsaw and taking questions for exactly 33 minutes." When nothing happens, you realize that you unwittingly fell into the old desktop-screenshot-as-windows-wallpaper trap. Suddenly, a video begins.*
Pensive, I want to play a game with you. For years you have tormented others, throwing chaos around yourself like a ventriloquist. You take great pleasure in antagonism, yet when those you view as inferior gain the upper hand, you are quick to rebrand your statements as "flame." Your life has been spent in search of a heroic woman, yet your actions indicate that you are anything but a heroic man.
The device on your left arm is the instrument by which you will be judged. If you humble yourself, its presence will be a small formality. If you do not, the device will teach you the lesson you refused to learn on your own. You insist that your physical appearance is an "objective 8" and that your IQ is "in the 150s." The veracity of these claims will now be tested: your salvation depends upon your ability to be honest with yourself. To begin your game, enter only this information into the computer system:
1. Your true IQ 2. An objective numerical rating of your physical appearance on a 1-10 scale 3. The following statement: "I fully and unconditionally submit to His judgment, and hereby command that no moderator shall intervene on my behalf under ANY circumstances."
Telling the truth will spare your life, but this new life may be painful because it will be lived among those who know your truths. Lie, and you will meet a fate worse than death. Complete this task and you will receive your true test tonight. My presence will be required.

There's also a good balance of accurately pointing out people's flaws without being so overwhelmingly cruel that they aren't happy to play along (well, at least until pensive's round). |

Hello Pensive. Thank you for playing along so far. The good will you demonstrated with your answers has not gone unnoticed, but you still have far to fall. Six of the eight cylinders in the device attached to you have now been armed. You will not find the substances inside pleasant. The first four contain herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, and the HIV virus. The last four each contain a carefully calibrated dose of a neurological poison that will reduce your IQ by 25 points per injection. The results may be more devastating, however, if you do not in fact possess the "80th percentile" physique that the doses were calibrated for.
The information you entered was used to create the test you now face. Had you followed the instructions exactly, the trap would have disarmed and you would be free to go. Instead, you must disarm them now. I have selected a series of mathematical problems that should be trivial for a borderline genius with a 58 Putnam score and 145 IQ. You will have 10 minutes. For each problem you solve, a cylinder will be disarmed.
If you are not confident in your abilities, you have one other option. Your photograph has been uploaded to a secret location, and a poll has been created for your autoadmit peers to rate you. Each rating point will disarm a cylinder, with the final two cylinders being disarmed upon an objective 7 rating. I haven't spent enough time on them to assess their difficulty, but they look like easier Putnam problems (A1-2, B1-2); even those take 15-30 minutes a piece for someone like me to solve and write up.
I actually shot myself in the foot once, on the 2002 Putnam, by working on the hard problems in the first 2.7 hours, then writing up the easiest one in the last 15 minutes. I actually fucked it up miserably because I was so hasty. Since Putnam grading is essentially 0/1 (0-10 technically, but scores between 3 and 7 are almost never given, the philosophy being that you either solved it or didn't) I lost at least 6 points that way, and possibly 10. |

Ok. For r and 2.5*r, for any real r > 1, to have the same leading digit, it's required that L( (log r) mod 1 ) = L( (log 2.5*r) mod 1 ). Let s = log r, and note that log 2.5*r = log r + log 2.5 = log r + 0.3979. So this requires:

L is a lookup function on "buckets", so this occurs only if s and s + 0.3979 fall into the same bucket. This, I believe, is impossible. The buckets repeat, "1" to "9", every 1.0... but the largest-width bucket is the "1" bucket of width 0.3010. Therefore, I judge what you're asking for to be impossible. Since there's no r > 1 such that r and 2.5*r have the same leading digit, there's no n for which 2*n and 5*n have the same leading digit. Amirite?
Therefore, I believe I've proven problem #4 to be impossible, so your test is unfair and I must go free. If I'm wrong and my proof is somehow flawed, you should be able to show me a counterexample: produce this n. |

The distribution of the number of heads on m flips of a fair coin is known to be symmetric about m/2; they're the Pascal's triangle numbers. I.e., for m = 5, your distribution is {0 : 1/32, 1 : 5/32, 2 : 10/32, 3 : 10/32, 4 : 5/32, 5: 1/32}. Because of this symmetry, when m is odd, i.e. m = 2n+1, we know that exactly half of the distribution is on the numbers m+1 and up.
So the probability that A flips more heads is exactly 0.5 regardless of the number of coins. Cool result.

That's the same thing as flipping 21 {0, 1} coins with A winning if the sum total is 11 or greater, and there's exactly a 50% chance of that due to the symmetry of the distribution. |

Haven't looked at the solution, but the answer's 3. 2^n * 5^n = 10^n, which always has mantissa (base 10) of exactly 1.0000.
Given the product has mantissa 1.0000, we know that the mantissas of the factors are either both exactly 1.0000 (impossible for a power of 2 or 5) or they have a product of 10, and the same-leading-digit criterion gives us a leading digit of 3. (An example of this is 32 * 3125, for n = 5).
I'm sure you're not impressed because I bet the link has the same solution. You'll have to take me at my word that I didn't look. |
