i'm definitely doing it, but won't have much time to work on it (due to callbacks).

i don't like doing a half-assed job but think i'll be eliminated in the first round.

does this matter?

Not at all outside of a minor note on your resume. If you win, it might be a bigger minor note on yoru resume. Considering how rarely young associates do anything along the lines of what you do in moot court, it's not much of a game changer. hth

Even further, you learn basically nothing. Either you're good at presenting an argument or you're not - a few hours skimming a book and doing it once or twice isn't going to change your personality.

If the interviewer did Moot Court and was good at Moot Court, they are more likely to cast a negative light on your resume if you have Moot Court on there but never won anything or had a special position.

"Member of Moot Court Board" is not a benefit at all.

Just leave it off unless you won something.

It is pointless unless you win a competition.

Simply being a "member of the Moot Court board/team" isn't that remarkable.

Things of noteworthiness go in this order:

LR

EIC of secondary journal

Moot Court Champion

Mock Trial Champion

member of Moot Court Board

Member of Mock Trial Board

dying in a car fire

SBA President

I found that judges were fond of the LR and Moot Court combo. It suggests you're well-rounded. So I wouldn't say moot court is worthless.

That said, moot court is just kind of fun. You get to play appellate lawyer and shit! Good stuff for those of us dorky enough to actually *like* the academic side of law.

It suggests that you research and write well (LR), and that you are good on your feet (MC).

Either way, the "well-rounded" observation came from a judge, not me.

"Good on your feet"?

You must not have seen too many Moot Court matches.

Most matches are only 15 min long. Not to mention you have 2-5 judges asking you a bunch of sophomoric questions regarding a case you spent MONTHS researching.

If you can't respond coherently with that much prep-time then you are a babbling idiot.

Mock Trial is much much more difficult. you actually have to have some kind of personality IN ADDITION to knowing the FRE like the back of your hand.

I was also a moot court judge, dipshit.

But I agree that Mock Trial is far more difficult. I excelled at MC, but was a babbling idiot at mock trial because my recall of the FRE was just pisspoor.

I don't believe I addressed the value of Mock Trial, standing alone or in relation to moot court, in any of my above posts. But carry on.

if you spent enough time on the FRE as you did on your MC briefs/research, then mock trial would be a lot easier. i did both, moot court was more work but also more fun. better competition locales, interesting legal topics, etc.

i also think people underestimate the importance of MC/MT if you're not looking at biglaw.

overall though, do either because you enjoy doing it. argument is fun, working with your teammates is fun, traveling is fun. it's a lot more enjoyable than locking yourself up in a dungeon and cite-checking or working on a note.

Different at H, but for many schools, moot court is pretty competitive and a big deal. LR/Journal + MC/MT are the two credited combos of LS extracirriculars. ITE, not having a journal and MC could be bad. Also, think about the # of people @ your school on both a journal and MC. Probably less than 10%. You stand out amongst peers.

The thread reminds me of this guy:

http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=128817

"It's like being on a journal--it hurts you if you aren't on it. Employers will see it as a gap on the resume and may ask you why you aren't on moot court. I'd work hard to get on so you won't have the gap on the resume, but after that point I wouldn't kill myself putting a lot of effort into it."

Secondary journal, and I enjoyed doing Moot Court.

The only way Moot Court would be higher than secondary journal is if you won a Moot Court Champion.

Take the secondary journal, especially because moot court might be more work (it was at my school).

i dunno at my school Moot Court seems like a big deal and secondary journals aren't known as being much help.
