Date: July 28th, 2019 12:18 PM Author: Lime Anal Roast Beef i binge-read this comic a couple years ago so it was interesting to see what got changed from the original series (which was written by strident atheist shitlib Garth Ennis 2006-2012) for a 2019 adaptation.
-Ennis hates superheroes and people who think they're cool. the comic was him working out this contempt at length. The Boys work their way up to The Seven (Justice League) after arcs killing many other superteams, same formula over and over: oh you think X-Men are cool? well professor x was diddling all those kids and they're all fucked up sociopaths, now watch them get murdered. oh you think the avengers are cool? well they're into sex abuse too and thor is a nazi, now watch them get beaten to death with crowbars, etc. etc. Now for budgetary reasons the show world is going to shrink, but it is hilarious that since Ennis wrote the comic there have been like ~25 immensely popular Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and capeshit is stronger than ever in our culture... and the only secondary superteam that makes it into the show is "Capes for Christ" and their hypocritical gay leader. which i remember thinking was hilariously "yesterday's culture war" back in 2010 or so. not a single marvel property attacked.
-GIRLPOWER. two powerful/competent/leader characters are just straight up gender flipped. (Mallory and Stilwell the Vought exec.) in classic female version of male character style they just end up being losers though. more fundamentally, the premise of the comics is that The Boys do work for the govt and have all been given special doses of V that make them strong enough to beat other supers to death (but not bulletproof, so they can still be put down and have to fight with skill/tactics.) Hughie accidentally punches through a guy in his first super fight, and the whole series is a lot more about the main guys putting people down. but in this version the only Boy who can kick ass in a super fight is The Female. Hughie (who is a wimpy 2008 nu male in the comics too, but can at least kick A-Train's head off) is a fully neutered 2019 boyfriend character with NOJERB who does a lot of gushing over how amazing it is that Starlight is a career woman who can physically dominate him.
