Who the FUCK in Kentucky is going to give TWO SHITS about your "Georgetown" degree? Let's take a look at one magistrate judge. (Gleaned from Facebook.)

http://www.kyed.uscourts.gov/judges/judge-eab.htm

Clerks are KY '06, KY '07.

Most magistrate judges have ONE clerk. You think they're going to pick some prick from GULC ranked #298 in his class over the #3 local boy from UK who'll be working for Stites & Harbison when he graduates? Please.

Go ahead, ask your career services. Ask them how many magistrate judge clerkship interviews go out to your class. Find out where they are. Find out their rank. Then, come back here.

So, you didn't do that, because you didn't ask about mag clerkships.

And you don't have any numbers, you just have an optimistic career services telling you that YOU'LL GET IN EVERYWHERE YOU APPLY!

Excellent.

maybe, I got interviews with a couple flyover state SC judges with with a worse GPA and school ranking than you, so who knows. This was a little bit before ITE though. And the state was pretty TTT.

------

Varies by court. Some don't even have law clerks (see e.g. California), because they have a staff atty system or have career clerks.

Many magistrates have career clerks too I've found. State courts generally take applications a bit later in the summer. You'd have to check the judiciary website for that state.

----

Do you want to work in bankruptcy? If so, then yes it is worth it. If you DON'T want to work in bankruptcy, but just can't find anything else ITE, then still take the job. Bank judges obviously expect you to have taken a course in bankruptcy; some like actual practice experience.Magistrate clerkships involve a lot of pre-trial stuff and discovery, and some social security type stuff. I would probably take it over a bankruptcy clerkship, but that's just me.

You won't get a bankruptcy unless you've demonstrated an interest in bankruptcy law, according to my professor advisors.

As for when state supremes take apps, it's not until September for most of them. Call the courts up and ask.

From memory:

LA accepts apps and hires on a rolling basis, TX accepts apps and hires alongside the federal plan, NJ is on a rolling basis, AK is in the spring, CO/NM/AZ lags a big behind the federal plan but not by much.

2 Fed. Districts

1 Fed. Magistrate

2 State appellates

I got success with one of them.

any advice for strategic bidding? i just want to make market and will go anywhere to do it. i was thinking that the best idea would be to bid on all lower v100 firms and play it safe.

how much of a national reach does the gulc degree have? would it be tough or easy to get a job in a secondary city (think minneapolis, seattle, boston)

I don't know what SLS grades are. Give me a percentage. Top half, possible to get a clerkship. Top 1/3, good shot at any given clerkship. Top quarter, great shot at COA. Just figure out a reason why you're not on LR to explain. Oh, and have a solid LOR who'll hit the phones for you.
