This is why titles, even though they seem like meaningless bullshit, actually matter. They're a public statement of how much the company trusts you.

Comp is what actually matters. A VP making $500k per year beats an MD making $450k. But no one knows the salaries, so titles confer the respect that leads to better projects and more favorable evaluations, that lead to higher salary (and better title, completing the loop).

in my organization pay is often determined by what you were making when you were hired. so you see people with the same job title who are afforded the same respect and authority within the organization, but one makes $20,000 more than the other because she came from a place that paid higher
