Edmonton police have charged a Catholic Junior High School teacher with sexually assaulting one of her male students. Alyssa Tungul, 29, faces three sex-related charges, reports CBC. She faces one count of sex assault, sexual counsel of a child under the age of 16 years, and having sexual contact with a child. The incident happened three years ago during the time period of June 1, 2016, and November 30, 2016, when she was teaching at H.E Beriault Catholic Junior High in west Edmonton, Canada, according to court documents. Tungul was charged on May 13, 2019, after the police started their investigation on November 26, 2018.

H.E Beriault Catholic school and the Edmonton police did not release this information at the time. Police said that they didn’t release the information because she was suspended from work and they believed there were no additional victims.

“A news release was contemplated when charges were laid against the accused,” Cheryl Sheppard, a police spokesperson wrote in an email. “However, the information gleaned from the investigation at the time did not lead investigators to believe there were any additional victims.

“As a result, the EPS felt there was no investigative purpose to necessitate a duty to warn.”

During the investigation, Alyssa Tungul was working at another school. She was teaching Grade 8 music at the Bishop David Motiuk Elementary/Junior High School. When the school was notified about the charges in December 2018, Tungul was suspended with pay on December 11, 2018.

“The teacher was removed from the classroom and school,” Lori Nagy, a spokesperson for the school said in an email sent to CBC. “We began an internal investigation immediately and are working closely with the EPS.”

Tungul will remain suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

“We want to assure parents the safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority and we continue to work with police on this matter,” Dana Prefontaine, a spokeswoman for Edmonton Catholic Schools said Thursday, according to the Edmonton Journal.

Alyssa Tungul made her first court appearance last month. She is not in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 24.
