I grew up a basketballmo and stopped playing baseball at like 12. But my 7 year old son has been obsessed with baseball since he was like 5 and says it’s the only sport he wants to play. He seems to have real aptitude. He was on a T-ball team this year but that was basically a joke, he was one of like 3 kids even interested. We play catch almost every night and he can actually fire it pretty hard right at my glove consistently and can catch consistently and basically effortlessly when we play catch (I’m tossing it soft not me firing it yet) and field decently hard ground balls and popups. I take him to hit on the weekends and when I throw him soft “coach pitch” type pitches he crushes them at a fairly high rate. My overall assessment is that he is somewhat precocious for a 7 year old. I’m happy to play catch and throw him pitches but I do not have the knowledge to even teach him good fundamentals.
What should I start doing now if I want to put him on the path to being a good high school level baseball player? Too early for a private coach? Any good resources you would recommend to me? Books or whatever?

This seems less and less true over time. The shift in the NBA in particular is crazy. There are still some guys from the hood, but it’s much different than it was in the 90s. Increasingly the league is made up of relatively well off kids who have been getting personalized training from a very early age.

You used to be able to come here for some insight and advice on random Qs like this. I remember some long thread about the nuances of youth soccer, which made me think to post this. But now you post and just get all kinds of lulzy negativity.

The most important fundamentals for batting are the grip, the stance, and the swing.
He should be lining up his knuckles when he grips the bat. That’s rule #1.
You need to find out if he’s swinging too early or too late and you can tell by watching him swing and miss and also what side of the field he hits it.
Since he’s right handed a little early will be on third base side and late on first base side.
If he’s early have him use a heavier bat and vice versa.
Back elbow should be up, parallel to the ground.
The single most important part of the swing is rotating his hips. That’s where the speed and power come from, not the arms.
The hips turn the body and the arms are along for the ride.
Second most important thing is to keep his head steady and keep his eyes on the ball. Debatable that this is more important than the hips.
Rotate hips, keep head steady, eyes on the ball through contact.
Tell him he needs to run through first base even if he’s thrown out by a mile. Never stop before reaching first base and head back to the dugout, that is a cardinal sin. Always run through first base and sprint doing it.
Pete Rote use to literally sprint to first when he walked, sprinted everywhere.
When inning is over, sprint to dugout or sprint to position on the field.
If he’s pitching and gives up a home run and the next time that batter comes to the plate, if he’s taking a little longer than normal to set up, adjusting his helmet, digging his feet in the dirt, etc., throw it at his head.
He’s maybe a little too young for that one, might want to wait until he’s ten to teach him that.
