i think dogs are just constantly mildly concussed by smell. every time one stops and takes that deep sniff you can see the momentary system crash while the olfactory buffer fills up. they don't even have the option of closing their eyes on a bad one. imagine if you woke up every morning and had to walk through a garbage dump just to get breakfast.
