Stats:

UG GPA: 3.81

LSAT: 173

white guy

26 years old, top-25 private UG, MA in a BS field that won't get me a job + 3 years of solid WE in a field that isn't going to lead anywhere I want to go. Average recs.

I know the economy is shit, but do I have a shot at an unemployment-proof school? (HYS?) Or if at CCN, can I age-pwn all the 22 year olds who never learned how to study? I usually do pretty well in classes. My GPA in college would have been 3.9 except that I got a 3.0 one semester after a death in my immediate family approximately 3 weeks before exams (like a stupid shit, I just went to the funeral, came back to school and took my exams instead of going to the dean and asking for an extension or whatever). Also, when applying, do I explain the 3.0 semester, or does it just make me sound like a whiner?

I went to a real school without grade inflation. My 3.81 was summa + phi beta kappa, top 5% of class. But actually, my degree was in econ. I just decided to go to grad school in something worthless instead of to do consulting, and I think it's now too late to cash in on the econ degree given that I've done nothing with it for the last 4 years.

i dunno man; law really REALLY sucks. like, it's awful, awful bitchwork of the worst kind. and to be forced to go 180k into debt for the honor of working at some sweatshop in nyc.... let's just say i wish i had listened to the sage counsel of xoers who 3 years ago told me NOT to do this. but here i am 2 months from graduation and dreading the future even though i have biglaw lined up.

honestly it works out to even more. if you truly have absolutely no savings/help from parents at all and no grants, it works out to well over 250k at cls and nyu, regardless of what the schools say about cost

where do you want to live where you're older? take $$$$ at a place like BU, graduate debt free, work at Ropes & Gray or Goodwin or that place Denny Crane works for a couple of years and live happily ever after.

P.S. this is the most credited advice you will receive if you want to be a lawyer. ignore it at your peril.

Of course it doesn't guarantee anything. The point is OP can go there for free and it doesn't matter if he gets biglaw. Hint: getting biglaw doesn't guarantee anything either. Do you know how many people have been fired from my firm who still have tons of debt left?

edit: my poast above does look like i'm saying he'll get biglaw. i'm saying he has as much of a shot there as anywhere and he won't hhave the debt.

well in that case he also needs to ask himself whether he's willing to work at a small firm or as a solo, because that's where he would probably end up

If you go into biglaw, you're making the same regardless of where you went to school. You're essentially locking yourself into biglaw for at least 5 years. With his stats, he can get a full ride or close to it to a good school where he'll still have a chance at biglaw but with more flexibility

What about retaking LSAT? I didn't study because I took two practice exams (timed) and got 177 and 178. Was sick the day of the actual exam (fever of 102) and probably should not have gone.

Worth retaking if I can get 177+?

Trying to think through shit like this is a waste of time and misleading anyway. I had "never learned to study" AND was out a long time before going to LS. Still pwned the shit out of my first year classes. It doesn't really take very long to "learn how to study" if the pressure is on and you want to do it.
