"Just sell upscale food" is asinine advice.
These people sell not only hot dogs, but increasingly, everything else too. I've seen pizza, bbq, kebab, Mexican obviously, sandwiches, you name it.
They then park right outside real restaurants and openly undercut them, sometimes benefiting from parking spots dedicated to those restaurants.
The arguments against them basically boil down to cleanliness, costs of compliance incurred by real restaurants, and noise and trash on public sidewalks. People have to decide what kind of society they want to live in and many people thankfully hate these fucks because that's not what we do here. |

They're just down there already so why not. These restaurants aren't destinations, they depend on foot traffic. Hungry people walking by, oh shit might as well eat. If you have hot dog vendors out front undercutting them people will buy cheap slop and not bother to go into the restaurant. The restaurants are paying a lot of money for the exclusive right to be the only place in the area that sells food. It's the same reason that they don't have liquor stores right next to bars. If you took a busy bar district and put a wholesale liquor store in the middle of it half the people would go get drunk for cheap and then go hang out in the bar without paying for drinks at an upcharge.
Now if you don't believe in any commercial zoning at all fine but then bars and restaurants many couldn't afford to exist at all if they were being undercut all the time. Yes, it's technically a scam, but so are movie theaters and airports.
In any legal business you'd be denied a permit to operate a business that undercut everyone around them. But because they're illegals they're sacred cows in liberal California. |
