These two hung out in the "cool crew," perhaps a misnomer for a group of people who drink a lot and are unassuming if not altogether lame. The girl is a 3L; the guy a 2L. I have heard that he is viewed by some as a chauvinist, often saying very inappropriate things to women. They were apparently playing some sort of game during which his hand struck her nose. She claims he intentionally struck her; he claims it was an accident of some sort. She broke her nose in two places. He refused to apologize, instead creating a facebook note about it once people around school reacted with disgust.
In the facebook note he dared her to accuse him publicly of punching her in the nose, insisting that it would be libel to do so. They had a back and forth in this facebook note (he posts 10 a week) and most of the IU students -- though considering his action and reaction deplorable -- stayed out of it. Eventually he called her ass "lumpy"; a female student posted something out of disgust on the facebook note; and he created another facebook note where he actually made fun of the female by creating a drinking game about what a pussy she was for reacting like this.
Things had largely subsided until this XO post and the Slate article, which have been forwarded pretty quickly. IU kids don't read xo much, so I'd guess that this subsides pretty quickly.
He's taken down all of the facebook notes; smart kid, on law review; I don't think anybody has all of the facts, but he definitely should have apologized instead of reacting how he did.
note: everything about the incident is just what i've heard from others. i didn't actually experience or see any of this, but the story has been retold (in shades of veracity) and commented among the students. |
