FUCK COMPUTERS.

Okay. I am on Maxtor's site and it says I must partition the hard drive of my computer to make Windows (XP) recognize this fucking external harddrive. I am not comfortable doing that. I hear that can fuck up your computer.

Is there another way?

You have to partition your internal hard drive? That doesn't make any sense.

I have a Maxtor external and it does require drivers...isn't plug-n-play. I have the driver on all three of my systems though (1 XP Home, 2 XP Pro) and they all recognize it. I assume you already tried the install disk/downloading new drivers?

What is the model of the disk? Go to the site, software downloads, and download the driver before you plug in the hard drive (or unplug it). It'll tell you when to plug it in. That's what worked for me

If you have winxp, it should automatically recognize the drive. Is it powered on? Is it physically connected to the computer?

For some reason XP and Maxtor external HDs don't play well automatically. He'll still need drivers. I ran into the same problem with mine.

I think it might have something to do with FAT32 and NTFS not allowing formating of drives over 40GB, and thus the OS starts calling for you to partition the thing into smaller drives to read/utilize it. I ran into a similar problem trying to use my 60GB iPod as an external HD

EDIT: Huh, the thing does say it's supposed to work just plugging it in (mine didn't). Download the diagnositc utility on the same page and try that

you may want to try restarting your computer, going into your cmos and setting your computer to boot off the external hard drive. If you have the bootdisk it should be able to run from that. Otherwise at the comand prompt (of the external drive) type: format X: (where X is the drive). Reboot and f-disk and partition to fat-32. reboot and go from there (look in the bootdisk dir and there should be a file like startup of setup; I can't remember what the exact command is).
