Is there a noticeable difference? My firm allows direct bill for PMBR but not BarBri. If neither is that much better, I'll just do PMBR and not wait for the reimbursement crap.

Thoughts?

Barbri is a full, month-long plus course that includes lectures on all the exam subjects, graded practice essays, and a practice MBE test under test conditions. It is comprehensive.

PMBR traditionally is a practice MBE test under test conditions, followed by 2 days of videos explaining the answers and test strategies.

Kaplan (which now owns PMBR) has expanded into the comprehensive test prep like Barbri. However, it is brand new and only offered in certain states. I'm not sure I'd rely on something new.

Most people going to big firms do BOTH Barbri and the PMBR MBE test. They are scheduled so that you can do both. Firms usually pay for both. The PMBR is somewhat redundant, but they have the expertise on the MBE and it is good to get a different perspective and a final review right before the exam.

He said most people going to large firms. Perhaps I have a strange group of friends, but most people I know subscribed to the theory that "if I'm not paying for it, I might as well sign up." That said, most people (myself included) don't actually go to every class. It's pretty common to take the PMBR exam but skip the lectures. It's also common to skip out on Barbri lectures.

that was how I and all of my friends felt - everyone I know who was going to a large firm that had direct billing signed up for both PMBR and Barbri. Not saying that they ended up doing both, but their firm ended up paying for both. People who had firms that just gave a "bar stipend" for bar prep, living expenses, etc seemed to only do barbri.

Should I do PMBR during those last couple of weeks?

I think it is worth it to at least do the PMBR mock MBE under exam conditions, although probably not worth it to go to the review sessions unless you really suck it up. The mock MBE shortly before the exam is a pretty good way to get yourself ready for how exhausting the exam can be and it can also be a reality check on your test prep so far.

no, you have to go to one of their sites. They have them all over the country, since the MBE is the same everywhere. They usually try to rent out the convention halls and other facilities where the actual tests take place, so you can get familiar with the environment you will be in.

the mock MBE psyched me out. I got a 98 on it and so for the last 2 weeks before the exam (and even up to the day we got results) I was sure sure sure I was going to fail. Ended up with around a 150 on the MBE.

I did not waste my time with the PMBR lectures since you get the corrections when you take the exam - if your firm is paying for PMBR it is worth it to do the practice exam but nothing else. I knew some people who signed up for the 6-day PMBR but these were the same people who signed up for all the barbri extra sessions - overkill and not the best use of your time. If your firm's not paying see if you can just get the PMBR practice exam off craigslist or ebay or something.

Is the "mock MBE" feature of PMBR that everyone is referring to the "MBE Final Review Course" (full MBE exam plus 2 days of review, $549), or the Combination Course or Foundation Course (which involve a 50-question "mini-exam" and 6 days of review)?

it is the 3-day "MBE Final Review" course. I don't think the 6 day course is worth it, especially not if you are taking a comprehensive bar prep course. Plus, the main advantage is the full mock exam. A 50 question mini-exam wouldn't give you that experience.

Many people sign up fr the 3-day course, go to the first day to take the mock exam, and then skip the 2 days of review. The review is basically just going over the answers, and they give you written explanations so you can review yourself more efficiently (as long as you are self-motivated enough to do that).

$549. $50 discount if you are an ABA member or NBLSA member, either of which cost less than that to join. They are also offering a $50 early bird discount by March 11. If you are really self motivated and can get your hands on some good practice tests with explanations, it might be worth it to do your own mock exam rather than pay even the discounted $449 (assuming you are paying your own way). You do, however, get a pretty good multistate outline book included and a shit-ton of practice questions.
