Subject: Demand letter ethics

I'm admittedly a bit rusty on PR. Just wanted to check that it's okay if a law student writes a demand letter for a friend as long as your name is nowhere on it and the friend knows you're not an attorney...right?

could depend on state. i think some have a broader definition of "practicing law" than others?

why don't you just write it and give it to him/her to send with their name on it? that is much easier.

Are you threatening to take legal action ON BEHALF of the friend?

If so, then you would be crossing into Unauthorized Practice territory.

But simply explaining the law, giving an explanation of the grievance and then informing them that the person has the legal right to take action wouldn't be "practicing" since you have no plans on performing any legal action in this matter.

Also, try not to sign the letter with "Attorney" in your name, just to be safe.
