Nevertheless, if you don't know what you want to do after you get your PhD, you should think long and hard about whether it is worthwhile to get a PhD. The vast majority of PhD's don't earn very much, and (with very few exceptions) they don't earn enough to justify the opportunity cost of the lost wages of being in school for 5+ years. If you are just getting a PhD because you don't know what else to do with your life, you are likely to regret it several years down the line. I'm pursuing a PhD because I love the subject field. At Chicago I'll actually make 30k a year (I got a special fellowship for top applicants too) |
