Subject field: Geophysical Sciences.

What are some cool things I can do in those three schools? And any other advice you'd like to give me?

Greetings,

OK if you're visiting those schools as a prospective PhD candidate and have to ask the Q "what are some cool things I can do in my chosen field," you aren't going to get in.

I hope he has already been accepted if he is doing visits at this time of the year. Nevertheless, if you don't know what you want to do after you get your PhD, you should think long and hard about whether it is worthwhile to get a PhD. The vast majority of PhD's don't earn very much, and (with very few exceptions) they don't earn enough to justify the opportunity cost of the lost wages of being in school for 5+ years. If you are just getting a PhD because you don't know what else to do with your life, you are likely to regret it several years down the line.

Yeah - I've already been accepted to UChicago, and invited to both Yale and Brown (so it's very likely that I'll be accepted to the other two).

I'm pursuing a PhD because I love the subject field. At Chicago I'll actually make 30k a year (I got a special fellowship for top applicants too)

Greetings,

Did you not have to include a research interests/proposal/outline with your PhD apps?

Any tips on formulating a dissertation topic/proposal? How close did you work with the professors to come up with the proposal? And how much clout does "knowing" the professor have in getting in at a certain school? Can he twist the arm of the Graduate Admissions Committee to get you admitted?
