A reporter had contacted him about something and Kiriakou inadvertently leaked the identity of a CIA asset who helped catch Abu Zubaydah. It was something like "Were you working with [NAME] on this matter?" and Kiriakou confirmed it. The reporter leaked this name to a Guantanamo defense attorney and then eventually Brennan found out Kiriakou was the source and wanted his head. The government had him dead to rights on a bullshit crime that had never before been prosecuted (or it was like the second time since the civil war or something), so he had to take a plea deal to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison.
