They could have completely deviated around the cell and added 15 minutes to the total travel time, but instead planned to descend to 35,000 when they thought the cell topped out at 33,000 and skirt just over the top, when in reality the storm expanded and the cell extended up to nearly 50,000 so they flew right into the worst of it. What awful, awful ADM. Why take such a huge risk to try to narrowly scrape over the top when you can add 15 minutes to the trip and remove all danger.
