Most of our recruiting efforts are conducted through our fall on-campus recruiting program. Our lawyers conduct interviews at approximately 14 law schools and at various local job fairs. Following these preliminary interviews, we invite second and third year law students to visit our office for a series of interviews with several lawyers.

What pisses me off is that Cleary Gottlieb is a top 10 Vault firm, and Howard is a Tier 3 law school with a reputation substantially lower than all schools in the Top 100. Cleary Gottlieb can get plenty of more qualified minorities from top 100 schools.
So basically Cleary Gottlieb, by interviewing at Howard, says they don't care about diversity and they don't care about hiring qualified minorities. Rather, they care about creating a phony image.
I'm in favor of AA, but i'm not in favor of phony maneuvers to make it look like you care about minorities. |

That's not necessarily true. I was going to pass up Michigan for Howard, and I suspect many of the top of the class at Howard had the same decision. It's similar to non-URMs choosing to go to a lesser ranked local school for reasons monetary or otherwise.
It's not like firms are going to UDC or Thurgood Marshall to fill diversity slots. The top 10% at Howard is probably as competent as just about any other law student, minority or otherwise. |

I don't know the history of Wachtell specifically, but Skadden was started by Catholics and Jews who did not have the pedigree to make partner at white shoe firms (specifically Root Ballentine - the precursor to today's Dewey Ballentine).
Wachtell's Katz and Skadden's Flom often faced off against one another in M&A battles, and both pioneered the concept of charging a "premium" for their services, over and above hourly rates.
Skadden, obviously, chose a high-growth model while Wachtell has chosen to remain very small.

Firms like:
Cravath, Swaine, & Moore Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft Dewey (Root) Ballentine White & Case Millbank Tweed Davis Polk & Wardell
Consider this - if it sounds English & Wasp-y, it was probably white shoe. If it has Jewish and/or Catholic names - probably not white shoe.
