Earnings for college faculty vary according to rank and type of institution, geographic area, and field. According to a 2006-07 survey by the American Association of University Professors, salaries for full-time faculty averaged $73,207. By rank, the average was $98,974 for professors, $69,911 for associate professors, $58,662 for assistant professors, $42,609 for instructors, and $48,289 for lecturers. Faculty in 4-year institutions earn higher salaries, on average, than do those in 2-year schools. In 2006-07, faculty salaries averaged $84,249 in private independent institutions, $71,362 in public institutions, and $66,118 in religiously affiliated private colleges and universities. In fields with high-paying nonacademic alternatives—medicine, law, engineering, and business, among others—earnings exceed these averages. In others fields, such as the humanities and education, earnings are lower. Earnings for postsecondary career and technical education teachers vary widely by subject, academic credentials, experience, and region of the country.

UT:

biz profs make like 150-200k as an assistant. i assume because they a) can easily get a high paying job and b) relatively fewer biz phds get the degree for academia in the first place (unlike econ, where I'd bet % gunning for academia is higher even if they could still get good jobs)

humanities seems to be around 65-70

engineering 90k

geo/physics 85k

econ 110k

cs 95k

https://sp.austin.utexas.edu/sites/ut/rpt/Documents/IMA_FS_AvgFacSalColRankEXP_2010_AY.pdf

obviously UT is a very good school so you can probably whack 10-15k off these figures for wherever he's teaching. more if it's a really shitty (directional) school

Right, it breaks out separate numbers for some factors that impact results like private vs. public status. It then mentions other factors that impact the results but aren't broken down into separate numbers like 2 vs. 4 year and field.

I guess I'm not sure what you're arguing. My estimate was 55-65K. The national average for assistants is 58K which includes a lot of different data points (different departments, X years of service, different kinds of schools, etc) but I think provides a fairly good estimate of what we can expect from a social science prof. This dude is in his first year, and the data is a bit old, so I think 55K-65K is a good guess.

entry level tenure track is about $40K in state schools and includes a 3-2 or 2-3 1st year teaching load in addition to getting 3 journal articles published before your 3rd year 1st major step review (the last review before you apply for tenure in yrs 4-5).

40k is what lecturers and shit at very crappy schools get paid, not assistants. 45-50k is a more realistic bottom floor for schools in the LSU tier (assuming english or something). MAYBE if it's humanities at a really terrible school

UGA is the only school with a 40k bottom that I can find. LSU, which is certainly worse, is also a 48k base:

http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/LSU-Louisiana-State-University-Salaries-E2878.htm

even ECU (!) is 50:

i don't believe those numbers except uga. i happen to know a lot about this shit since my firm defends universities, well their board of trustees, from employment disc, unlawful termination, and whistleblower claims. salaries are like $38K to $45K first year, then when you become an assoc professor it's like $60-65K, then full professors get like $75-80K. then it goes up by cost of living adjustments (like auto 2.5%), running an admin committee like promotion & tenure, or becoming a dept chair or associate college dean.

i can't see UGA having a high enough engineering/science ratio to skew salaries heavily enough where the average (70k) is more than 20k higher than the average for humanities/non-econ social science

the average is skewed by associate deans making $200k+ or provosts (250-300K) or profs paid $100K by the college and $100K by grants (ie. marky mark emeritus chair of epistemology, etc.)

factor $200K versus $45K and it's easy to see how average, rather than mean, skews numbers better than they are for tenure-track not yet tenured profs.
