That Harper's article inspired me and I haven't eaten anything for the past three days and only about 3k calories in the past seven. Obviously it appears to be working thus far, but I'm wondering if there are big hazards I should be aware of before I try going a week or more without food. Currently I'm just taking a multivitamin.

I'm not a superfat, btw, only about 5'11 and 200.

They purify you; hone your thoughts; crystallize your motivations. Breathe in. Hear the crinkle-crack of your cavity expanding with air. Modern day St. Anthony at your shipyard desk, you. Taste of copper in your mouth; running from your nose. Sputtering cough leaves red flecks against the couragated metal wall. This is good. You feel good. Pure. You hear the rain outside, banging against the tin roof. In the distance, the repulsor cranes carry on their swan ballet, offloading pallets from ships across the thousand worlds.

Well, I basically started on Wednesday after eating a full calorie load on Tuesday. I've had a few hiccups but I've been ramping up the intensity pretty fast

-Wednesday I ate 1 chocolate-covered pretzal because there was a box at the office, and that was it

-Thursday I caved a bit while covering a press event and ate a couple cookies

-Friday I ate nothing

-On Saturday I was invited to a St. Patrick's Day party. I was planning in advance to eat at it and pretty much ate normally, probably about 2200 calories

-Since leaving that party on Saturday night I've eaten nothing.

I've only been drinking water, besides one beer and some whisky at the party I went to. It's been easier than I expected but also not a walk in the park, though I hear once you get over the 3-4 day hump it can be a lot easier because hunger mostly goes away. We'll see if I can maek it.

One thing that helps is that in mental terms I think it's easier to simply eat nothing than to rigorously watch what you eat all day.

Could you elaborate on who it's really unhealthy for? I doubt it's me as I'm an extremely generic subset of the population rather than an exceptional one, but obviously I should confirm this.

My genetics and metabolism are pretty much the norm for American 20-something doods, I imagine. I'm not as active as I should be but I do enough walking to not be a super couch potato. Obviously I should be lifting, but I'm currently not.

based on my knowledge there are two schools here: intermittent fasting (ie 5/2 diet) and long term ultra low calorie lifestyles.

imho, something like the 5/2 works because as you said it's fairly simple to follow and you still get to eat "normally" for the majority of the time

those who push the ultra low cal lifestyle do so for the supposed longevity benefits as much as (if not more so than) any weight loss consequences.

You shouldn't go much longer than about 36 hours. Your body starts to break down muscle about 48 hours after digesting your last meal. Your testosterone and hgh levels go through the roof at about 16 hours of no food, stay that way until about 30 hours (HGH goes up 2000% after 24 hours), and start to tank about 36 hours in. IF also keeps insulin low.

IF is way better. Most of the benefits from fasting kick in at about 16-20 hours. Not much of a point going beyond 24 from a physiological viewpoint. But no harm until about 36.

If you do IF though, you need to keep a consistent eating window or you'll fuck with your hormones and circadian rhythm. Also not a good idea to fast without medical supervision if you're diabetic. Also, men can fast longer than women (it's a hormonal thing).

Lean gains is a 16/8; you can also do a 20/4 or even a 23/1; 5/2 is okay. I do one meal on a cut/maintenance and two meals on a bulk. There's also the warrior diet but that's not "true" IF.

Also, don't eat post-workout. Ride that HGH wave. When you eat, insulin goes up which brings down HGH and Test.

Can you explain more not eating after workout? I thought traditional idea was you wanted that post workout feed with insulin spike to pack nutrients into muscles.

After working out (heavy weights/low-moderate rep) your body releases HGH and Testosterone. When you eat, your body releases insulin. When Insulin goes up HGH/Test tanks, and the opposite. So you want to ride that wave for about 4-5 hours post workout. You'll still get the insulin spike benefit (whatever your first meal is up to 24 hours post-workout).
