Single dood. Large city (i.e. DC, NYC, LA, SF, Boston, Chicago).

I've calculated this and most months I spend around 2.5k per month just on drinking and going out to eat. That doesn't count spending on anything else, i.e. rent, electricity, transportation.

Is this too much? I think I just go out and lose track of how much I am spending on drinks. It works out to over 80 bucks a day, which is a ton. No idea how I manage to do this.

This.

The figure is not reasonable considering how most people who have this kind of disposable income also work jobs that require them to spend many evenings at the office getting food paid for by Seamless Web.

I actually never work that late so I don't expense meals. The problem isn't meals. It is drinking. Unless your firm pays for drinking and cover charges then you would blow lots too.

Eh, if you're only limiting the conversation to domestic cities, there's a pretty strong argument that use of "i.e." is credited here.

How could you spend even more? Did you have a bitch to spend money on? I blow money buying chicks drinks or dinner but it isn't that much of my spending. I really don't understand how I could spend that much. There is no way I spend 80 bucks a day on Su, M, Tu, and Wed. I must be blowing like 200 bucks a night every Fri and Sat. Fuck.

I would spend about 200-300 on drinks alone when I would go out. But I would mostly order fairly high end scotch that was like 20 or so per drink.

I also ate out like 5 days a week for dinner, and the other 2 days I would get food delivered. I went through a 2 year phase where I literally never had anything in my refrigerator and I either ate out or delivered food for every single meal.

And no I have never been a fat.

That is me sorta. I never have anything in my fridge though in the last couple months I have tried buying shit at the supermarket and eating in. Maybe that is why the last two months I have only spent like 1.9k. Before I use to order take out every night.

I still drink too fucking much. I don't know how to solve that.

Yep. It doesn't take that long to blow that much, especially if you go to dinner beforehand and/or go to a nicer bar with more expensive drinks.

Dinner would ruin me on Fri and Sat. That is easily 75 bucks plus.

I spend this much. What do you think people are doing "every waking moment" that's BIGLAW related? 90% of your work obligations are billing, and the typical associate bills well under 2000 hours a year these days thanks to the economy.

This is true. I never understand what people are doing at the office from 9 to 8. I bill virtually every minute I'm in the office. I take lunches back to my office. 9 to 6:30ish 50 weeks out of the year will net me 2,100 hours. (Of course, actual hours vary significantly and sometimes include weekends.) If I don't have work that needs to be done, I'll go home early and say I'm available by Blackberry.

This isn't the type of consumption that can get you in a lot of trouble. Relatively small figures and easy patterns to change. Not necessarily built into a conspicuous striver lifestyle. It's the cars, lofts, trans-oceanic vacations, and really high-end clothes/jewelry that makes a big dent.

I know a guy who gets a new watch every 2-3 months, it amounts to an obscene spending habit. $50k/yr...but a pretty sick collection.

That's nothing, I'm at $3.5k. Think about it-15 dinners or brunches a month if you have a gf or are dating is around 1.2-1.5 k. Drinking w friends another $750 or so, and then groceries and alcohol for the home make up the remainder.

And yes, I am aware I have a problem and need to start budgeting and/or tipping less. Eating out is $$$.
