i have a friend who's been an analyst at citigroup for 2 years. she says she's going to apply in 2 years because she needs MORE work experience before she can get into b-school.

bschool admissions isn't very clear cut for the majority of applicants. when would be best to go for a person is also very not clear cut.

business schools, especially HBS and Stanford, love stuff like TFA/americorps, or other non-profit stuff. banking is too common, and you're competing against too many applicants.

what year did you graduate college? Virtually impossible to get into HBS if you've been out of college for more than 5 years by the time you enter b-school.

HBS and Stanford are the only schools that explicitly favor younger applicants. Kellogg prefers older applicants, and they reject very strong people who have less than 4 years of work experience. Wharton also tends to lean older as well.

HBS on the other hand, has been going for the younger superstars. This trend is only accelerating. For this year's entering class at HBS, roughly 70% of the class graduated from college either 3, 4, or 5 years before entering. The number of students who've been out for more than 5 years is significantly lower. Basically unless you were in the military or hold an advanced degree like an MD or a PhD, or did something extraordinary, you're not getting into HBS if you graduated college more than 5 years ago.

HBS is also accepting college seniors under their 2+2 program.

i don't know you that well, but your post-college work record is highly erratic. you just don't fit the profile of what they're looking for, even though you did americorps for a bit. not trying to be offensive, just being honest.

you did less than a year in arkansas. you were unemployed for a year or two years before that. you're unemployed or underemployed now. even if you get a decent non-profit job now there will not necessarily be any continuity between your two "real" jobs and you basically just look like a fuck up who bounces around from one thing to the next and hasn't really achieved anything and certainly isn't driven. HBS is not desperate to land *any* black female with a 3.5/700 in the same way that law schools are.

much of your biographical information is wrong

in any case i think if the op is correct and someones friend got in as a non-URM with just 2 years of americorps type experience id have a chance as a URM with two years of americorps type experience, a decent gpa and a good gmat (i havent taken it obviously but i tend to do well on standardized tests)

in any case we'll see what happenes

you don't have two years of americorps experience. you don't even have one! maybe my biographical data is wrong, but have you had *any* job other than americorps that you would say fits into a resume and doesn't look like just doing something random to pay the bills? even if the answer is yes, MBA programs don't really want someone who has worked 3 different jobs for a year each unless there is a really good reason for transitioning from one to the next.

most consulting and banking associates don't have previous experience in the sector, bro. The analysts all burned out and went to b-school to land something better. The prestige of HBS is enough so that bulge bracket banking and MBB are considered fairly standard jobs. Getting Goldman or McK isn't that hard, but getting into PE or starting your own company is.

Something like 70% of incoming associates at bulge brackets don't have previous banking experience, which makes the summer an interesting time because clueless associates have to work with experienced 2nd and 3rd year analysts.
