For me on rewatch the biggest realization of 5 and 6 was that AJ is phenomenal and Robert Iler did an amazing job. And all of that is made even better by the fact that these characters are based on a smattering of actually mobsters in Jersey and Philly who really did go to shrinks, have names like Big Pussy and whose moms plotted to kill them. but this is what i was talking about with the second half of my OP -- this type of fight club/office space/the wire anxiety about a declining country was common back then. and the only reason i think we don't see it now is because we've lost hope. all of these works had a hopeful ending. chase is on record saying the final episode is supposed to be hopeful. that's what "don't stop believing" is all about. despite the tragedy and uncertainty that surrounds us all, we should remain hopeful. the reason shit like this doesn't get made any more is that the idea of being hopeful for a collective brighter future seems ridiculous now. |
