I lied on my law school app; how screwed am I?

Date: March 24th, 2010 5:08 PM Author: drunken mediation So, I lied on my law school application. I didn't lie about prior criminal convictions or anything like that; no, I lied about a job I had. I put in my application resume that I had a government internship for a summer and my application essay was basically devoted to how that internship inspired me to go to law school. Now, I was selected as an alternate for that position, but I was never actually selected to do it. In other words, I completely fabricated the experience on the essay.
Now I'm applying for the bar and I'm terrified. I see a couple options: (1) Come clean with the school and amend my law school application, likely leading to expulsion or something horrible; (2) Omit the fake internship completely from my bar application and just hope no one notices; (3) Put on my bar application that I was an alternate, but omit that I was never selected; (4) Jump off cliff.
The second option seems like the best if I can get away with it, but I would be rolling the dice. After all, all it would take is for the board of bar examiners to actually read through my law school application and notice the disparity.
The third option seems dicey. I think I have to fill out a form that gets sent to every employer/internship asking me about my trustworthiness (oh the irony, I know), which would seem to screw me.
Any advice? (And, yes, I know I'm pretty fucked.) |

Depends on the state.
My state called all previous employers and verified DATES. Seriously, my app was delayed because my employer accidentally listed my dates of employment 2 months off of the actual dates.
I would not lie on the bar app. If anything, leaving it off seems safer. The odds of them cross-checking resumes seem much lower.

So if you put your fake job on the bar app, chances are good they will contact and try to verify employment. Not a good idea to make shit up on your bar application. |
