Wherein redditors earnestly discuss the merits of UCLA over HLS

It’d be about $80k more for me to attend Harvard (which is close to home for me). UCLA gave me some scholarship (not a lot) but there tuition is generally cheaper x i want to do big law for 3-4 years (in Los Angeles) and then eventually work in house as a GC for an entertainment company. Thoughts? Not to throw all my details out there but This is $160k vs $240k.. |
Date: May 16th, 2025 11:08 AM Author: chocolate stage The difference in terms of reputation and placement is not as great as some here are suggesting. HLS is currently tied with Duke for #6 in the USNWR rankings. UCLA is ranked #12.
HLS places 67% of grads in law firms and 56% of those in big law (=38%). UCLA places 71% of grads in law firms and 50% of those in big law (=36%).
When you add in entertainment industry and desire to work in LA, it amounts to a fairly compelling argument for UCLA, especially with the price tag differential. |

Yes Harvard is better a school, but not by much. The employment outcomes are identical for big law (250-500+ lawyers is top 53% of class for both) yet one is already in LA and you’re getting a scholarship. UCLA would be the best option |

HLS part of what you pay for is the ability to not try at all in lol school, fog a mirror at OCI and have multiple offers from the firms in LA that will only take top 10% from UCLA. Date: May 20th, 2025 10:36 AM Author: chocolate stage if you haven't been following along, law school admissions have jumped the shark. everyone scores 175+ now that they have gimped the LSAT and people caught onto the "accomodations" game to get 2x time while taking the test at home. average GPAs are like 3.95 because everyone graduating did college from home during COVID when professors handed out As to everyone for signing into zoom and cheating on tests. overall grade inflation is out of control and most people in non-joke majors don't apply to law school at all anymore.
and post affirmative action, your "essays" *wink wink* are where you get your DEI points for "lived experience."
you have white guys with 3.8/177s getting shut out of T6 schools while minorities with 3.6/168 are getting into HYS and making TikTok's lecturing you on how "your essays really matter folks!!! numbers aren't everything!!!" |

I even visited a couple schools before applying that I knew were really "fit" sensitive. I really think we downplay the importance of essays. Stats get you in the door, but essays seal the deal imo. I have good stats, but I definitely think I outperformed my stats. My essays, I can say now, without a doubt a probably some of the best I've ever written. I really took my time with them and put my heart on my sleeve. My personal statement was deeply tied to my experiences as a FGLI applicant, and I have no regrets really putting my story out there. It was a risk, but I think it paid off. My advice is take your time with your essays so that you can give your writing time to breathe.
