It's been taking longer and longer to come back to the original employment for each successive recession. Maybe the economy is changing in a fundamental way that makes it harder for it to recover jobs.

outsourcing is one reason explaining the general trend. less union protection is another.

though obv there are things unique to this particular recession that made it really awful.

on another note, fuck the boomers.

He's partly right though. If you exclude the overentitled GM workers, who represent a very small portion of our overall workforce, decent white collar professions usually have extremely little protection regarding their careers. It's left at the whims of VPs and directors. Same with outsourcing.

They aren't the cause of this recession of course, and a protectionist policy is usually short sighted in some ways, but they definitely dont help the job situation.

That is true. Unfortunate the only solution I would see to the outsourcing problem is a severe devaluation of the US Dollar, an appreciation of the Yuan and Rupee, and just a general race to the bottom.

no, dood. congress has been the road block all along. the bad actors here are Snowe, Specter, Collins, Nelson, and the other mods. we should have gone MUCH bigger with stimulus initially, and injected a big second round when it became clear that early 2009 employment estimates were too optimistic. instead we went too small on the first round and never did a second round at all.

The day after Brown won in Mass, Obama said the voters have sent a message and that he heard it clearly. Then he shifted to speaking and fighting about jobs, jobs, jobs - for a week or so. Ever since then he has focused his energies on healthcare.

We wouldn't need a second stimulus if the first was not an Obama-democratic clusterfuck.

about as wrong as it is possible to be. direct aid to states is some of the quickest-acting and most effective stimulus available. it keeps teachers, police officers, and other gov't employees from being furloughed or fired--much more effectively than even tax breaks for businesses, insofar as state budget planning tends to be much longer-term than business budget planning, and therefore better able to adjust to anticipated future revenues.

calculatedriskblog.com has shown that graph quite often during the current recession. The interesting thing to note is that in the recessions over the past two decades, it took far longer for employment numbers to climb to where they were pre-recession, than in the recessions of the past. It could take 4+ years before we recover to pre-recession payroll numbers.
