I'd guess that 90% of the people don't know what a Cornell is and you'd get blank stares. There isn't any prestige-seeking there; you go to UB, Canisius, St Bonaventure, Fredonia, Brockport, Buff State, Niagara or one of the Rochester equivalents (Nazareth, St John Fisher, Roberts Wesleyan, Hobart). That's the entire universe.
Even at private schools (with the exception of Nichols and Park before it became...diverse / a "basketball school"), the goal often isn't Ivy+ - it's to go to the best private or Catholic college you can with a half+ scholarship. Not an entirely retarded view, but you'll see, e.g., the valedictorian of a good public like Clarence or private/Catholic like St Joe's / Canisius / Nardin going to Alfred U (presumably for free).

Upstate bro here. Agree with everything Jimbo said. In my part of the state Cornell was just some private like Colgate or Hamilton (to the extent people even knew it was a college at all). No one knew it was ivy league or what ivy even was. Penn was definitely Penn State and was a great school to get into. Cuse, Nova, Pitt, held in high regard as was Providence. That is where all the top kids in my prole high school went. One dude got Notre Dame and he still has a plague on the wall at my school. Georgetown is an all black school.
Columbia is an on line school, not even fucking kidding, look it up.
The saddest thing is that with all the money flooding into colleges NY still couldn't turn Albany into a flagship.

Concept of prestige doesn't really exist, as histrionic bitchmade lawyerfaggot mentioned above. There's no sense of the pecking order or what fits where. When I was going out of state for college, a friend of the family / neighbor asked me "why don't you just go to Buffalo State? GE is hiring right out of there" - it's just a different world (and I'm 99% certain that's not the case and hasn't been since 1960, anyway - I doubt that GE is hiring 920 SAT mouth-breathers for $80K career-track jobs with pensions).
To the extent that there is any school that carries prestige, bigeastboy has a good list above + Notre Dame. Buffalo is heavily LMC Catholic and Notre Dame is #1. Pitt, 'Cuse, Nova, PC, Boston College (although considered very fancy / preppy), etc. would be considered to be great outcomes, although I don't think it would mean much more to people than going to Canisius College, St. Bonaventure, Niagara, or UB (these are known locally as "the big four" and there are events, an annual golf tournament, etc.). Another factor is going where your parents / siblings went of those schools.
