hard to tell what effects, if any. Just sounds like a strong distorted lead tone, probably using at least his amp (he used Mesa Boogie for that album) and probably some distortion pedal. That they made cooler with the double guitar lead sound

Cr but on the recoding it's definitely overdubs. It's multiple guitars stacked together recorded separately. As for the core tone it's some kind of high gain amplifier overdrive. It may have a small amount of chorus. Then several of them on top of each other to create that harmonic effect.

Yeah in any studio setting you're just going to multitrack guitar overdubs. The harmomizer I think is considered its own effect. It's not trying to perfectly replicate layered guitar overdubs but instead do its own thing. Some people 'like' the digital artifacts it creates. It's the same with the original Whammy pedal that was used on many classic 90s songs, the digital artifacts came to be appreciated by fans. It's not better or worse, just different.

You can record guitar in the closet as long as it's full of stuff you won't get any harsh room reflections.

You can get any guitar you want. You can get 95% of every tone known to man with a Les Paul, a Strat, and a Tele. If you're recording high gain tone doesn't matter so much, everything will sound like the amp no matter what you use. Just make sure you get it set up. You don't want the action too high or to use strings that are too heavy. I tell people use strings based on how big your fingers are. If you have giant hands and want more stability use a higher string gauge. I wouldn't go above 10s. I would recommend 9s to most people. The #1 noob mistake I see people make is they play strings that are too heavy for their finger strength, or their action is too high. I see people mess this up all the time. People have really terrible setups they play for years because they read about some macho shit in a magazine. If you have small hands don't try to be a tough guy.

Get Guitar Rig and a DI box (necessary to match impedence). Do all your demos in digital so you don't have to worry about recording an amp until you're ready. Then mic the cab. Recording a tube amp with a microphone is like having sex without a condom, it's the real McCoy. Don't be a fag and settle for some digital bullshit.

Also record all your bass DI and then reamp it through the bass amp later. You should always have two bass tracks, the DI with a low pass filter (cuts out the top end) and a live amp recording with a high pass filter (cuts out the low end). You should set the filters in an X pattern so the two don't overlap but meet at the same crossover point (around 500 hz). The DI bass will capture the low end and the amp will capture the grit and character of the mid range and highs. Always do this.

Very CR about low action and smaller gauge strings. In my band in high school our rhythm guitarist (who had no rhythm) couldn’t figure out why he sucked and couldn’t play and then I picked up his guitar one day and it was like trying to play and upright bass like the strings were 3/4” from the fretboard and felt like a tension cable in a curtain rod. When I fixed his guitar he sucked way less, but still had no rhythm and was generally an uncoordinated spazz.

99% of musicians are 100% talent free and are of no use to anyone. Step 1 get really good at something to the point you have something legitimate to say. Then find someone else who is at your level. Don't waste time with amateurs or people who have no ability. They can't help you in any way. Avoid everyone who is not legitimately talented at something worthwhile.

Yeah we were 16 and didn’t really have ambitions beyond Battle of the Bands. I met my best friend that next summer who was a legit musician and we played to together on and off ever since. We didn’t have the balls to put off college and really go for it, and it’s one of my biggest regrets even though it almost certainly wouldn’t have led to anything in terms of a real career as an artist.

What do you mean by a stack?

Just get a DI box, an interface, and the latest version of Native Instruments Komplete. It comes with Guitar Rig. Just plug your guitar into the DI box into the interference (requires 48 volt phantom powerful). Cheap interfaces are insanely good you can get a Scarlett or whatever. You can do this all for less than a thousand bucks.

When you're ready to turn your demo into a studio recording buy an amp and a microphone. But you will be fine with Guitar Rig for a long time. You can get all your ideas out and refine them.

ProTools is outdated and an enormous waste of money.

If you're autistic, get Reaper. If not autistic get Studio One or Cubase.

Avoid Ableton or FL Studio if you're not making rap or EDM. Logic is fine if you have it.

For mixing just get Waves plugins. I also use IK Multimedia T-Racks bundle. Never pay for more than 100 dollars for a bundle or more than 30 dollars for a plugin. All software goes on sale for dirt cheap.

FabFilter Pro-Q is also amazing.

You can do anything with any DAW just depends on your workflow. Ableton is based on looping segments over and over. It's made for DJs and shit. I have always had a linear workflow so I don't want to loop things like a DJ. It's just personal preference. You can do anything in any DAW just depends on how you like to do shit.

TCR - all he needs is a DAW, interface, and something like Native INstruments Komplete that has everything you will really ever need (including Guitar Rig). I would also say some studio monitors (like JBL 306, like $280 for the pair). If you get Komplete, you will want a midi controller, these can be really cheap and honestly just get a used one (tons of these stacked up at guitar center last time I was there)

Do you have Mac or Windows? If Mac, its almost a no brainer to just get Logic Pro for $200, unlimited upgrades, etc. Logic Pro also has its own suite of synths and I think even a guitar sim, and a pretty robust drum software. It also has its own version of Ableton's Live Loops which is what people like so much about ableton.

If you have Windows, get Reaper like he recommended

Don't forget a passive DI box. You need something to bring the guitar up to line level. It will sound weird if you plug straight in. Those are a hundred bucks and make a big difference. You can also get a reamp box which is not necessary but highly recommend. Reamping is great. I like to nail the part in the DAW using as many takes as I need and then send it back out to the amp for recording. I don't like to play and twist knobs at the same time. Once I nail a part I just want to worry about tweaking my signal chain and getting the recorded sound perfect.

I'm not familiar with whether the Scarlett interface can do it on its own. My interface does not.

Think of it this way, how much electricity do you think strumming a guitar creates when your magnetic pickups convert the vibrations into electricity? It's a very tiny signal. A DI box, powered by 48 volts (same as a condenser mic), ups this signal to level that your interface can better convert into zeroes and ones. It's kind of like a preamp, but for guitar signals. If you have never tried it once you try it it clicks. Your Guitar Rig or Amplitube recordings will sound 10x better.

https://reverb.com/item/80032353-radial-prodi-passive-direct-box-pro-di-open-box

Edit: I guess some are passive and some are active. I use an active one. Great results. Looks like active is better with passive pickups which can get muddy. It doesn't color the sound afaik.

interesting, thank you

I just checked, and my primary interface (MOTU M4) does have +48V phantom power, I think its the line in vs instrument setting - hence why I probably didn't know when a DI was needed.

But good to know. TY

Hell even today 5150 amps (no longer Peavey) are found all over the place in rock and metal music.

It sounds different from all the other albums. He had to have been doing something different. Also, here is a video of EVH in the studio working out the Amsterdam riff in fucking 1985.

Thoughts on recording drums? Are digital dupes good enough now that you shouldn’t bother until you’re getting paid to record? Per my abject ignorance above my only experience is very dated and analog, but I do recall recording drums being a pain in the ass.

Drum recording is always a pain in the ass. I recommend the Glyn Johns technique. You can get a huge sound from just 3 mics. Lots of famous songs were done this way. There are variations too like adding an overhead or something. You can do a lot with a little. You don't need like 16 mics unless you're in Tool or something. Just Google Glyn Johns and do the math to avoid phasing. A lot of garage and indie rock was done this way. Just minimize room reflections and do a lot in post. You can always throw a gate on there. Mixing software is really advanced these days. Bowie recorded Lust For Life in like a barn and those drums sound huge. Don't overthink it. Keep everything simple and aim for completed songs and projects. Don't aim for the moon just get going.

How does John frusciante get his tone, particularly on blood sugar? I know part of it is that’s just how a strat sounds but he still has a unique tone

There's a couple elaborate wrinkles with Frusc. One is that his chorus pedal, the Boss CE-1, has a preamp section. Essentially it was designed for keys and synths and there's a big impedance mismatch. The preamp section does something to the guitar tone. He also uses something called a Guyatone Flip Tremolo pedal which I don't think he ever actually uses the effect but it phase inverts his signal. I also think he uses a stereo amp setup with a clean amp and a dirty amp for some sort of hybrid tone. Also uses a 200 watt tube Marshall for his cleans which gets insanely loud without breaking up (Maximum headroom).

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There's way more to it. I'm not autistic enough to get the whole story but this should be a good starting point. There's a ton of forums and YouTube channels just devoted to emulating Frusc but I've maxed out on my personal autism about it.
