this seems crazy. why would you do a jd when you can get into a good mba program? stats:

167-168 (I don't know which)/3.92 at legit top-15 college (not Brown), currently paralegaling for two years at one of the top 3 firms in a secondary region.

granted, she could get into UVA early, but why? why biglaw? and jd/mba seems even dumber.

There is NO reason to ever plan on doing a JD/MBA

it only makes sense if you're in a JD program and want out or vice versa

if you want to be a lawyer, get the JD. otherwise, don't waste the time and money.

what stupid fucking advice - you should really write someone about this.

jd/mba from a top school is useful for the following things:

1. politics: the connections you get from both the law and b-schools are invaluable

2. distressed debt/restructuring: knowledge of both finance as well as bankruptcy law, tax law, etc., is critical.

3. entrepreneurship: knowing both law and business helps when starting your own company.

4. government or NGO: for the obvious reasons. if you want to do some type of financial or econ policy work at world bank, fed, or IMF, having both degrees gives you more clout.

that's nice, but it's not what I'm asking. for someone in her position, isn't government possibly the best move, not as an instrumental thing for m7 mba admissions purposes, but as an end in itself? law is a terrible career. it'll take a couple years to get the work experience she needs for an mba, then a couple more years to get it. by the time she gets to doing what she wants to actually do, she's almost 30.

well, for girls, what counts as "solid" is wider. so any reasonably good consulting, finance, marketing, government, ngo, etc.

the difference is that for non-urm guys, you basically need a prestigious company on your resume (MBB, top bulge-bracket, PE, hedge fund, etc), but with chicks they could get away with working at second-tier firms or some niche area like luxury marketing, non-profit, media, etc.
