I suspect one of the main reasons was that there just wasn't as much to gain by going to HYP in the 50's. We had a much, much more middle class economy back then. Wall Street had been knocked on its ass in the Depression and never fully recovered. Silicon Valley existed, but there were no start-up IPO's and VC was in its infancy. There was much less of a lottery to win, and blue collar people often did as well economically as guys working in respectable office jobs. also iirc Columbia had the largest endowment of any school in the world up until the late 60s or early 70s. |
