i may only have 10k or so to devote to my solo practice from the get-go. that being said, i plan to forego a dedicated office, etc until i land a client or two. until then, ill rent office space as needed.
tips?

Better question:
Comprehensive list of resources on starting a solo practice INCLUDING very frank and honest discussions on the costs and benefits and chances of success.

If living expenses are covered for a yr, then 10K would be enough assuming you didn't take Plaintiff cases which required a lot of costs (which you would pay for and get back upon settlement/jdgmt).
Work out of your house. Rent "an office" from one of those business suites which basically allows you to receive mail at the address and receive phone calls. You can rent out their conference room or crt reporter's conf room if you need to. Get a website going. Get your name on the web everywhere. Get business cards, malpractice insurance and hustle your ass for business.
If you feel its not going to work out, then start sending out resumes too. Not that much risk.
