Reading articles today and they all refer to Blink 182 and their critically acclaimed albums in the 90s, and how they were this talented, transgressive band.

I'm not a music snob and I like Blik 182 - but that's not how they were perceived in the 90s at all.

They were seen as the poppiest of the pop punk bands, a step down from the Backstreet Boys, with very simple short, immature songs that they recorded with not much talent.

Not that its a big deal but it makes you wonder how often history is completely wrong...

they were seen as sellouts because their stuff was all over MTV and 'TRL' alongside britney spears, and their music videos were slick hollywood marketing productions.

Pop punk for sure but totally unrelated to the Backstreet Boys. They were viewed as less important than Green Day, but then the Bush years started and everyone realized Green Day had become self-important fags, and Blink-182's irreverence pwned the fuck out of "serious" 90s punk bands

Green Day had more hits, better songs, but were also a mall band for kids going to Hot Topic. Green Day along with the Chili Peppers are the most normie bands in the history of the alternative genre. But RHCP had more talent and better musicianship.

Blink doesn't have a wide body of listenable material but they had enough hits that everyone remembers them. And they got points for being genuinely destructive and irreverent whereas Billy Joe always seemed like he was just in it to sell merchandise to the kids of soccer moms.

I think the Green Day point is a good one. It seems like Green Day was seen as the elder statesmen of rock for a bit, then they moved it to Foo Fighters after Green Day became annoying.

Now Foo Fighters has put out shit music for 15 years and Dave Grohl got in trouble for his love baby, and they're trying to push Blink 182.

I don't think it will work because Tom Delonge is certifiably insane and Travis Barker might be the most annoying person on earth.

CR. We used to call on another fags for listening to pussy shit pop punk Blink 182 at school, but secretly we downloaded all their songs from Napster or Limewire.

I also listened to stuff like Sex Pistols and NOFX and Crass and Anti-Flag and WIZO and Rammstein and RATM. All kinds of crazy ass shit. Now I don’t listen to music hardly at all, and if I do, it’s the Nashville Top 40 station. lol.

It is weird to see how they are viewed today

Back then these bands were basically corporate boy band type groups. Completely GC with slick Hollywood videos, manufacturered styling, etc

Counterpoint Tom DeLonge seems like he's kind of an asshole in real life which gives credence to the shtick. There's also wild legends of their behavior before they got famous of their antics. They seemed to genuinely not care.

What? I was a skater bro type wearing corduroy pants in junior high in the 90s and this is bullshit. Backstreet Boys were always considered lame as fuck and something for chicks. Blink was something we listened to alongside Oasis and Greenday. Your post is straight up revisionist history and I won’t stand for it

Blink 182 was about 1/3rd Green Day and 2/3rds Bloodhound Gang. Nothing respectable about them.

Pop punk wasn't even a thing until later like 2002 imo. They were crude dudes who made songs about jacking off and stuff until they became emo queers later

They were very adjacent to South Park, which was a parallel cultural moment that sort of posed as an inheritance of early 90s slackerish nihilism, but a necessary corrective because it was not as self-serious. By 94-97 you have all of these pop stars and random high school kids in Plano killing themselves and dropping dead from heroin ODs, so by that 97-98 period people were ready for content that still sounded irreverent and like it contained an impulse of rebellion but was lower stakes. Also the country was literally hearing all about the sitting POTUS shoving cigars into the twat of a fat 22 year old Jewess, and the economy was kicking ass, so fart joke nihilism made sense on a lot of levels.

I went to a party once where they put a youtube pop punk playlist on the tv. Ranging from Blink 182 to really obscure shit that you barely remembered. the entire party we just all sat around and rocked out to it. I didn't like that type of music at the time, but in retrospect its a really fun genre.

Also saw a band play a bunch of this at a honky tonk in nashville once, the crowd went insane.

imo the Linkin Park revisionism is even crazier. they were a band for Losers and CRAWWWWLING IN MY SKIIIN was internet shorthand for pure cringe and was used in anime music videos.

now everyone remembers them as the coolest band ever that everyone loved and Chester was the greatest singer of all time.

I’m talking about Carousel and Ben Wah Balls. Dammit was the beginning of the pop punk. Buddha and Cheshire Cat fit much more in the punk genre.
