Reading articles today and they all refer to Blink 182 and their critically acclaimed albums in the 90s, and how they were this talented, transgressive band.
I'm not a music snob and I like Blik 182 - but that's not how they were perceived in the 90s at all.
They were seen as the poppiest of the pop punk bands, a step down from the Backstreet Boys, with very simple short, immature songs that they recorded with not much talent.
Not that its a big deal but it makes you wonder how often history is completely wrong...

I think the Green Day point is a good one. It seems like Green Day was seen as the elder statesmen of rock for a bit, then they moved it to Foo Fighters after Green Day became annoying.
Now Foo Fighters has put out shit music for 15 years and Dave Grohl got in trouble for his love baby, and they're trying to push Blink 182.
I don't think it will work because Tom Delonge is certifiably insane and Travis Barker might be the most annoying person on earth.

It is weird to see how they are viewed today
Back then these bands were basically corporate boy band type groups. Completely GC with slick Hollywood videos, manufacturered styling, etc

They made like 15 albums man
By the 7th or 8th one they were each virtuosos at their respective instrument

What? I was a skater bro type wearing corduroy pants in junior high in the 90s and this is bullshit. Backstreet Boys were always considered lame as fuck and something for chicks. Blink was something we listened to alongside Oasis and Greenday. Your post is straight up revisionist history and I won’t stand for it

I went to a party once where they put a youtube pop punk playlist on the tv. Ranging from Blink 182 to really obscure shit that you barely remembered. the entire party we just all sat around and rocked out to it. I didn't like that type of music at the time, but in retrospect its a really fun genre.
Also saw a band play a bunch of this at a honky tonk in nashville once, the crowd went insane.

imo the Linkin Park revisionism is even crazier. they were a band for Losers and CRAWWWWLING IN MY SKIIIN was internet shorthand for pure cringe and was used in anime music videos.
now everyone remembers them as the coolest band ever that everyone loved and Chester was the greatest singer of all time.

(Guy who didn’t start listening to Blink until Enema of the State)
The 1998 hipstery thing to say was, “I like old Blink”
