He put all his faith in these people who got tricked into moving dozens of men into single buildings where they'd get popped. They had the city divided up into quadrants, and their troops weren't allowed to cross the quadrant lines. Somehow Russia found out about the quadrants and selectively bombed them to herd troops into the biggest intact building in that quadrant. Russians knew the Ukes would not spread out into other quadrants because they didn't even know who was in command of the other Ukes over there. The Ukrainian commanders had no idea Russia 1) knew about the quadrants, or 2) was using this herding technique, until after the city had fallen and Russians began talking about it.
Russia still hasn't confessed as to how they cleared those salt mines but it's pretty fucking obvious from the footage how they did it. |

Russia was able to capitalize on that at Bakhmut, in part because Soledar had been Ukraine's main defensive outpost for Bakhmut city. That's why the collapse of Bakhmut was bloody but also foregone. Ukrainians became demoralized and they had to start kidnapping conscripts off the street. You didn't see those videos before Soledar.
That's another way of saying the place doesn't matter. Also, you don't get to pick which battles are decisive in warfare. If your adversary makes "Soledar" decisive, you have to deal with it. |
