well, nice reply :). i think keker is great and i believe everything you wrote. but what i was getting at is my impression that keker is a close-knit group of san francisco liberals. to be provocative: tree huggers, bleeding hearts, tofu eaters (not that there's anything wrong with that). i personally would worry about an overly PC environment, which i can't handle. but i might be wrong, what do you think?

This is true esp. if you are a CGWBT.

I did some research with the internet archive wayback machine and looked back at some old KVN websites. Checking the associates listed in 2002 against those listed in 2007, it looks like 8 associates were eventually promoted to partner, 16 associates departed, and 2 remain. Is this a typical migration pattern in selective law firms?

Subject: partner track timing

Hi kvnassociate. You said above that "generally people come up for partnership during their seventh year and start as partners in their eigth year." This partner track seems a bit longer than average. For instance, on the Munger website it says "we generally consider our associates for partnership anywhere from four to seven years at the firm--considerably earlier than at virtually any other major firm." Does kvn ever promote an associate to partner before the start of their eighth year?

Thnaks for the info.

kvnassociate, how would you compare Keker and Munger (I understand that you likely have little basis for comparison)?

Subject: base pay increases to $160K?

Hi kvnassociate:

Several firms appear to have recently raised the base pay of first year associates to $160K. One example is Quinn, as shown on their website: "Annual base compensation for entry level associates in 2006 stands at $160,000 plus a $10,000 bar stipend and year end bonus."

Has KVN raised first year associate pay to $160K? If not, do you think it will happen soon?

Subject: value of diverse experiences

Hi kvnassociate:

Thanks for taking the time to share your perspectives on HR, TTC, and Irell. I really appreciate your sage view of how a new associate might find a specialized firm like TTC limiting if they learn through experience that the firm’s particular specialty, in this case IP litigation, isn’t their thing after all. Looking at the KVN website, I noted the KVN point-of-view that "we strongly believe that the complete skill set of a great litigator can only come with the broad practice experience one gets from working in many substantive areas of the law. Therefore, we have not formed formal practice groups. While many of our attorneys are renowned in specific fields, we pride ourselves in our ability to tackle any and all complex litigation, whether civil or criminal. We especially encourage our associates to work on a variety of cases." After reading your post above, I better understand the value of joining a firm (like KVN) where having diverse experiences in the first few years is possible, as it could be quite beneficial in finding your real strengths and long-term interests.

BTW, I know a woman who worked as a summer associate at Irell. She had a very positive experience, much different than the several bad experiences you had. Let’s hope your future experiences with Irell are better!

Thanks again kvnassociate!

If you're interested in antitrust you might want to stick with Gibson/Latham or maybe Heller. I'm sure KVN does great antitrust work and have talked to a few attorneys who thought there antitrust was top notch but I think there's fairly limited antitrust work out there compared to D.C. or NY. (which still leaves a lot but not enough for more than a few firms to have a significant practice)

Subject: managing the three choices

Hi kvnassociate:

It’s very impressive to hear that KVN is bringing in “huge amounts of work.” It’s nice to know that the firm is growing beyond the two founders, and now has a number of very strong partners with rapidly growing practices. Sounds like KVN has a great future!

I’m sure there are many readers like me who would like to learn more about how KVN manages through the three choices you outlined for dealing with the current capacity limitations. For instance, regarding hiring, how many associates do you envision KVN hiring each year over the next few years? Are you hiring any laterals, or mostly from clerkships and schools? Regarding turning away major amounts of work, how do you decide which cases to accept and which cases to turn away? (turning away good cases must be hard...) Regarding teaming with larger firms, what considerations influence these decisions?

As always, thanks for your time, kvnassociate.

Thanks for the extra info, kvnassociate. The KVN situation brings to mind the phrase "overwhelmed with opportunity"!

Helpful for those considering KVN, which is the tiniest of tiny groups on this board.

Subject: odd question

Hi kvnassociate,

I join everyone else here who has found your posts incredibly informative. My wife and I are both very interested in KVN. While we'd prefer to work at separate firms, all things being equal, there's a not insignificant chance that KVN will turn out to be the clear front-runner for each of us. Does the firm itself have any kind of policy that would bar both of us from working there (assuming that you'd want to hire us both otherwise)?

Thanks!

wow. marrying a lawyer would be terribly boring. marrying a lawyer who does the exact same thing you do at the exact same small firm would be mind bogglingly boring

Thanks for your response! We both agree that working together would present its own set of challenges, so that's not something we'd jump into lightly. Fortunately that decision is a ways off for us.

Following up, would things be different from your end if one of us were hired before the other applied? I ask because I've heard of at least one firm that has an affirmative "anti-nepotism" policy, which can be waived but only with considerable difficulty. Anything like that at KVN?

Thanks again!

I definitely agree that so much depends on the group you're attached with. I've known people at both firms and thought the cases/experiences they got were great which is why I was surprised to see them not on your list. But in retrospect I think a lot of it had to do with the practice groups they were in. With some of these practice groups it's almost like a firm within a firm.

Separate question for KVN. Does KVN get most of their cases post-discovery? I've been in client meetings where KVN was excluded due to rates for some projects and brought in for others. Do clients tend to bring Keker in once it's clear that things are going to trial (or at least the probability is high) or are there actually a number of cases where Keker is used from start to finish. My impression is that they're brought in sort of like ringers once things get really serious but my first hand experience is a sample size of 1.

i think it's pretty telling that the thread about the best boutiques in caliornia ended up being almost entirely about keker and van nest. if only it were actually possible to get a job there. from what i understand it's pretty near impossible.

mainly the small size of the firm and the credentials of the people already working there. and the fact that the firm doesn't recruit through the traditional channels of on campus 2L interviewing for SA positions.

but maybe you can give a more accurate picture. what sort of grades and other qualifications are actually required (assume a top school)?
