Sad that the Backfire really never got anywhere. While technically inferior to the B1, it was designed with both a nuclear and conventional role in mind (unlike the purely nuclear B1)

There were hundreds built. The Tu-22 Backfire is a medium bomber and not a B1 class anything. It remains in service. Its is being upgraded to fire the new Kh-32 and GLONASS guided bombs. The first Tu-22M5 is currently in testing.

You mean the Blackjack Tu-160 or the "White Swan" in Russian nomenclature. 32 built. 16 in service and the rest in reserve as a spare parts supply. Assembly line remains so if there is a need they can resume production but the Kuznetsov engines are a bitch and its too expensive to operate in larger numbers. It too is being upgraded . Its in not way technically inferior to the B-1B that you have in service. Its the equivalent of the much more ambitious B-1A withdrawn from Yankee service.

LOL DO YOU KNOW HOW TO READ U WHITE NIGGER?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_High_Altitude_Area_Defense

First Line Units Activated at Fort Bliss[edit]

On 28 May 2008, the U.S. Army activated Alpha Battery, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade. The Unit is part of the 32nd Army Air & Missile Defense Command. It has 24 THAAD interceptors, three THAAD launchers based on the M1120 HEMTT Load Handling System, a THAAD Fire Control and a THAAD radar. Full fielding began in 2009.[18] [19]

On October 16, 2009, the U.S. Army and the Missile Defense Agency activated the second Terminal High Altitude Area Defense Battery, Alpha Battery, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, at Fort Bliss, Texas.[20]

On August 15, 2012, Lockheed received a $150 million contract from the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to produce THAAD Weapon System launchers and fire control and communications equipment for the U.S. Army. The contract includes 12 launchers, two fire control and communications units, and support equipment. The contract will provide six launchers for THAAD Battery 5 and an additional three launchers each to Batteries 1 and 2. These deliveries will bring all Batteries to the standard six launcher configuration.[21]

Deployment to Hawaii[edit]

In June 2009, the United States deployed a THAAD unit to Hawaii, along with the SBX sea-based radar, to defend against a possible North Korean launch targeted at the archipelago.[22]

Deployment to Guam[edit]

In April 2013, the United States declared that Alpha Battery, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, would be deployed to Guam to defend against a possible North Korean IRBM attack targeting the island.[23][24]

Israel[edit]

Currently the only active foreign military installation on Israeli soil is the American AN/TPY-2 early missile warning radar station on Mt. Keren in the Negev desert.[25]

Turkey[edit]

According to U.S. officials AN/TPY-2 radar was deployed at Turkey’s Kürecik Air Force base.[26] The radar was activated at January 2012.[27]

Yeah, still technically in operational testing or as Russkies call it "state acceptance trials." With that logic the S-500 is operational.

The production line was stopped because of Democrats in Congress. Our 6th-generation fighters were literally on the drawing board (for some time) by the time you finally got your 5th in the air. That's a fact, son.

In 70 years the Soviets never thought they needed to build a dedicated rec airframe. They always made do with rec versions of interceptors or strikers or bombers. Closest they ever came to a dedicated rec airframe was the old M-55, but even it was never really a spy plane but a balloon hunter ultimately augmented with a rec payload almost as an afterthought. What the commies did instead was build obscene numbers of spy says. Until the collapse their sat constellations positively dwarfed the US's.

Russia's "new" airplane (a retrofitted airliner):

Which would you wager is more sophisticated?

The airliner with the 50 ton sensor payload and SAR arrays powerful enough to cook your brains in your skull.

The little drone thing is cute but of no real strategic value.

That thing can put out more jamming power than half the air forces on this planet combined and it has DIRCM arrays on it so no MANPAD in service today can hit it.

LOL. Congratulations on finally developing SAR. You've almost caught up with 1980's technology.
