Very hard to tell. The selection process seems 100% random, and judging from my class the school you went to has almost nothing to do with whether or not you were selected.
If there's any advice to give, it's to kick ass in the interview you do and apply as many times as you can.
Also JAG likes the lines on the resume that biglaw employers don't care about - "leadership", overseas experience, etc. So try to get as much of that in there if you can.

Seriously it seems to be completely random. People who are superstars get dinged, while you scratch your head looking at the people who are selected on the first board.
Never done a selection board myself so I don't know the criteria. But I think a lot of it is based on your interviewer's subjective take, your level of perceived commitment, and the strength of the candidate pool you're up against.
It doesn't help that selection rates are in the single digits.

It's both very uncomfortable and very difficult to not look like a bag of ass in them - you almost never look squared away.
Also, if you care about that sort of thing, they are not flattering at all.

This is a tough question. At the end of the 4 years, my take home salary will be around 70k/yr, which is not a bad sum at all. I would also take a big hit on my loan payments due to how IBR works. The continuation payments, while small, aren't insignificant (although those might be going away)
However, the fed likes first tour JAGs who get out, but apparently our marketability goes down a bit after the first four years. I also don't like the prospect of staying in 7-8 years - at that point you almost feel obligated to stick around for the pension and I don't know if I want to make JAG a career.
In the end it will depend a lot on how I'm enjoying my work and my prospects upon leaving. If there's a good chance of an AUSA or DOJ position, I'll probably jump after 4 years. But it's hard to beat the QOL and people here in the Corps.

Exit options are fairly nebulous. I know there's a career fair every year, and some people have made valuable contacts from it.
I don't know anyone personally who has gotten out, so I don't have much first hand knowledge. But biglaw, obviously, is foreclosed to 99.9% of us. If you stay in 10 years, I'm not sure why you wouldn't just stay in the next 10 for retirement. The more people I talk to, the more I'm told that every tour beyond your first one in JAG depletes your marketability (even in the public sector). The things you do get more and more removed from the practice of law.
Of course, that's just me shooting from the hip, and you'll get a better feel for that as you come up to the end of your first tour.

preference for prior service (army) guys?
also, can you volunteer for forward deployments in lieu of sea tours?

It's not a flame. I did ABA for a year, then switched to Non ABA. Getting a better education and more interaction with prof at my Non ABA school. It even has higher bar passage rates then a lot of ABA schools. Kinda funny. :)
Learning a ton more too. And won't come out with 200K in debt. Still get to sit for the same bar exam too. So why go to a TTTT trash heap, when employers won't care. If I have passed the bar I am golden...
I guess I will see if the Army will look past the ABA requirement for law if i have passed the bar when I am a Captain in another MOS. :)

no, army is not like navy. it's one active duty application; doesn't matter if you're still in law school or not.
the check box for reserve/ng only comes into play if you were designated as an alternate from what i can tell.
i applied to the separate reserve board. deadline was the 15th. hopefully the results will be out in june.
