Very hard to tell. The selection process seems 100% random, and judging from my class the school you went to has almost nothing to do with whether or not you were selected.

If there's any advice to give, it's to kick ass in the interview you do and apply as many times as you can.

Also JAG likes the lines on the resume that biglaw employers don't care about - "leadership", overseas experience, etc. So try to get as much of that in there if you can.

Seriously it seems to be completely random. People who are superstars get dinged, while you scratch your head looking at the people who are selected on the first board.

Never done a selection board myself so I don't know the criteria. But I think a lot of it is based on your interviewer's subjective take, your level of perceived commitment, and the strength of the candidate pool you're up against.

It doesn't help that selection rates are in the single digits.

I wish I could answer this definitively, but I can't. The military in general is big right now on both gender and racial diversity, though, so I'm almost certain the answer is yes.

Don't take my word for it or get your hopes up on that, though.

JAG culture is very laid back (some would probably say too laid back, and I'd agree in some aspects).

Social life is pretty active, especially if you are at a base in/near a large city. Navy locations are, in my opinion, the best the military has to offer. If you're a single JAG, though, you feel a bit left out - it's very much a married man/woman's club.

Trust me, you'd wear the NWU's over the khaki uniform any day of the week.

Depends on the command, but a lot of JAGs wear the NWU as their daily working uniform (especially if there are at a base where a lot of ships will port). If you're in Hawaii, though, you'll be wearing service whites instead.

The Service Khaki Uniform, however, is an abomination wrought by Satan himself.

This is a tough question. At the end of the 4 years, my take home salary will be around 70k/yr, which is not a bad sum at all. I would also take a big hit on my loan payments due to how IBR works. The continuation payments, while small, aren't insignificant (although those might be going away)

However, the fed likes first tour JAGs who get out, but apparently our marketability goes down a bit after the first four years. I also don't like the prospect of staying in 7-8 years - at that point you almost feel obligated to stick around for the pension and I don't know if I want to make JAG a career.

In the end it will depend a lot on how I'm enjoying my work and my prospects upon leaving. If there's a good chance of an AUSA or DOJ position, I'll probably jump after 4 years. But it's hard to beat the QOL and people here in the Corps.

Can you tell me more about these exit opts? I'm very much gunning for Army JAG, and would actually like to stay in for 10+ years, but I do want to have options available after 10 just to avoid getting moved around. My interest is more along the lines of FBI than DOJ or AUSA though, but I want my options open.

Exit options are fairly nebulous. I know there's a career fair every year, and some people have made valuable contacts from it.

I don't know anyone personally who has gotten out, so I don't have much first hand knowledge. But biglaw, obviously, is foreclosed to 99.9% of us. If you stay in 10 years, I'm not sure why you wouldn't just stay in the next 10 for retirement. The more people I talk to, the more I'm told that every tour beyond your first one in JAG depletes your marketability (even in the public sector). The things you do get more and more removed from the practice of law.

Of course, that's just me shooting from the hip, and you'll get a better feel for that as you come up to the end of your first tour.

Gotcha, thanks. I haven't heard anything about that, but it does make sense. I also wasn't aware of career fairs. Guess I'll play it by ear when/if I get in.

Can people who get seasick become Navy JAGs?

Yes. Lack of sea tours are not uncommon on most JAGs, much less first tours. You'll probably spend some time on a boat depending on your command, though.

Not that I ever really thought about joining the Navy but I get seasick very easily and I always wondered if that just meant you couldn't be in the Navy or if you eventually got over it or you just took anti-seasick pills every day?

I actually don't know how this works - most people probably don't know they're seasick until they get on a carrier or the like.

The JAGs I know who've been seasick initially take pills for the first few weeks and eventually get used to it.

There is some prior service in the Corps. It'll give you a small boost but nothing guaranteed, obviously.

You are strongly encouraged to go on Individual Augmentations (IA), and those are viewed about equally to sea tours. It's a career killer to not have one or the other.

I don't want to say impossible, but close. I think this year they took 4-5 Direct Appointments the entire year - and I imagine there were hundreds of times that many applications.

Is the ABA accredited law school requirement waivable. Like if I pass the bar in say cali. And lets say I am a 1st Lt. or captain in lets say the army via OCS, could I get the ABA requirement waived?

And even if I could would I even have a chance?

Almost no chance regardless. The Navy takes very few people who aren't immediately out of law school - 4-5 a year at most.

I guess Army law is still open to me. They take people who are captains via a few years out of OCS. Oh well, I never wanted to get stuck aboard ship anyway. :)

It's not a flame. I did ABA for a year, then switched to Non ABA. Getting a better education and more interaction with prof at my Non ABA school. It even has higher bar passage rates then a lot of ABA schools. Kinda funny. :)

Learning a ton more too. And won't come out with 200K in debt. Still get to sit for the same bar exam too. So why go to a TTTT trash heap, when employers won't care. If I have passed the bar I am golden...

I guess I will see if the Army will look past the ABA requirement for law if i have passed the bar when I am a Captain in another MOS. :)

I'd say not to give up hope - there might be one more board before you actually sit for the bar (or get results, not sure when the trigger ends). Obviously after that point you'd be a Direct Accession.

I'll reapply to the army in the fall, but isn't it same as navy in that there's like 5 spots for grads?

iirc you just checked a box on the army app for reserve, is that right, or was it a separate app? If the latter, no.

no, army is not like navy. it's one active duty application; doesn't matter if you're still in law school or not.

the check box for reserve/ng only comes into play if you were designated as an alternate from what i can tell.

i applied to the separate reserve board. deadline was the 15th. hopefully the results will be out in june.

Yes it's quite small - 4-5 each year. And you'll be competing against a bunch of people with decent credentials and probably lots of trial work, which makes it even more difficult.

I don't know of anyone who made it into the DAP right out of law school.
