"A Washington National Opera musician, who was on board the Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday night, killing seven passengers and injuring at least 140 others, is facing backlash for complaining on social media about her missing violin.

Professional violinist and music professor Jennifer Kim was among the 238 passengers traveling from Washington DC to New York on Amtrak train 188 when it went off the rails in Philadelphia at around 9pm."

you don't know the story behind her violin.

for instance, i have a box of memorabilia that is very important to me. if my apartment building burned down to ashes, killing hundreds, but i made it out alive, my first thought would be about that box. my second thought would be of people i knew who died or had their lives impacted in the fire. my third thought would be where i would live and whether insurance covered my losses. a distant fourth would be people i don't know who died.

also, didn't she tweet it basically right after the crash? maybe she was in a car where nobody died and she didn't fully appreciate the situation.

either way, being sad over a treasured item with sentimental value is not strange.

weird would be a complaint about a commodity good, which, as i understand it, a violin often is not.

i pulled recent auction results off of tarisio and they're all over the map:

http://tarisio.com/cozio-archive/price-history/?search_city=&search_last_name=&Maker_ID=563&order=price%3ADESC

high for violins is $126,000 (2010), low is under $2,000 (1996). honestly if i had a $126k fiddle i'd be a little worried about it too

Her violin is almost certainly insured if she's in an orchestra.

As a result, this is a lot like being involved in a bridge collapse that kills dozens and going "OH NO MY INSURED CAR!!!"

To be fair,

Except for the small fact that every Beemer Six Series drives exactly the same, while no two violins in the world play exactly the same. And the fact that she literally makes her livelihood playing her instrument. And the fact that she has probably spent thousands of hours learning and adjusting to all of the tiny idiosyncratic nuances of that particular instrument, and as a result she feels a very close personal bond with that particular instrument.

But yeah, other than that.

To be fair,

So you're saying that her initial reaction--before she knew there had been fatalities--was to personalize the tragedy and vent her frustration and fear for the safety of her most prized possession? What a bitch.

HaHa. Are you being serious or running flame? It was clear to everyone but this narcissist that the crash was serious. For her to have tweeted what she did rather than checking to see if anyone needed help is fucking unforgiveable. And you defending it should surprise no one and speaks to what a piece of human garbage that you are.

John Goglia, an airline safety expert and former member of the National Transportation Safety Board, told Forbes that he was shocked to see a number of the passengers with suitcases.

He said he shuddered to think how much extra time it took for them to retrieve their luggage and added: 'Of all the aircraft accidents I have investigated or am familiar with, this is the first where it appears significant numbers of people took their belongings with them in escaping.'

'Certainly now that airlines and the FAA are clearly on notice that survivable accidents could be imperiled by passengers wasting time collecting their bags, they need to take action to address this issue before anyone needlessly dies in a survivable accident.'

Mr Xu has since defended his actions on social media.

'The three of us were sitting in the same row and the luggage compartment was just overhead,' he wrote, according to the Wall Street Journal.

'We didn’t block the aisle. Our passports and money were in the bags. If we didn’t grab them, we would have been in trouble…'

The way your dad looked at it, this watch was your birthright. He'd be damned if any slopes gonna put their greasy yellow hands on his boy's birthright, so he hid it, in the one place he knew he could hide something: his ass. Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then when he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable piece of metal up my ass for two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you.

Meanwhile the 2nd car of the train was completely destroyed with anyone in it.
