summers off, lives in battery park, owns car, Title I school with 8 kids in her class, unbelievably strong union, benefits, tons of other vacation. She will be making 90,000-100,000 eventually for being a glorified babysitter (even she admits that's what she is).

I seriously was thinking of killing self.

Upstate NY teachers are probably the most overpaid. It is extremely difficult to get a job at an upstate school because they get paid highly despite being in economically depressed regions.

It is status quo, correct. There is a strict payscale and a teacher is paid according to the payscale. Yes you need to do silly continuing education seminars (i.e. how to pop a video of dora the explorer into the VCR, etc...). In fact it is far more rigid than the "lockstep" arrangements you have at law firms (which can be adjusted in an economic downturn).

During the summer you can engage in more high risk endeavours like starting up a business or what not. But the choice is yours.

At my high school in upstate NY, the local paper did a special on all the teacher's salaries.

One guy was making over 100, about 12 were making over 90, and probably 50 were making over 75. No joke. I'll search for the link if someone doesn't believe me. One of the teachers making over 90 is a gym teacher.

This is teachers mind you, not principals or superintendents. For 100 percent job security, easy hours, full benefits, to work 180 days a year.

And liberals bitch about teachers not being paid enough...

It depends on where you are. My mom is a teacher in TX, and in my hometown, lockstep teacher salary never gets you over about 55K/yr. Starting is like 35K/yr.

Seriously, I've thought about teaching advanced math courses at a high school in a nice city in TX with my preftigious (according to XOXO anyway) math degree.

I'm smart enough that I could figure out some small business to grow during the summer. Maybe even get it large enough to quit teaching and build the company into something meaningful. All it takes is a good idea and not be a dumb.

Teacher's unions are also unbelievably powerful. Can you imagine having rock solid job security. Read up on NY rubber rooms. This is absolutely mind boggling. If a teacher's behavior is egregious enough to actually get removed (which has to be very extreme) they spend years in the rubber rooms getting paid a full salary for doing NOTHING!!!!! Can you imagine sitting for years in a room and making 70,000 for absolutely messing up?

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/education/2008/05/04/2008-05-04_teachers_in_trouble_spending

_years_in_ru.html

Now some smartass will come and say "demand and supply"... but there is information assymetry here. Teacher's obfuscate the difficulty of their jobs and people aren't aware of just how rock solid teacher job security is.

A valuation of solid job security, summers off, low stress, amazing benefits (mortgage assistance, healthcare, etc...) adds up in my mind to at least 50,000-70,000 a year.

One of the difference between the dumb/poors and us is that we debate objectively the pros and cons of law, biglaw, worklife/balance, etc... To poors/dumbs, they are always oppressed, hard done by. They sit around in government agencies making 50-70,000 for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of difficulty of importance and yet they complain about this or that. Based on productivity smarts they should be making 1/12th what biglaw lawyers make not 1/3.

teachers do a lot of tedious shit in summer.

though it's low-pressure and non-demanding, you'll hate yourself if you are a little ambitious.

1-they have to show up and do shit. We can do our shit from home (sometimes). Everyday

2-they have to deal with children all day.

3-???

(continue to add to this list until I feel better about my life choices)

come on. it's not like they're up in the front of the class doing socratic. sad to say this, but for non-hs classes, the teacher's job duties, in descending order of importance are--

1. make sure students don't commit intentional torts

2. make sure students don't commit negligent torts

3. instruct one student every paragraph/page/minute to read aloud a paragraph/page of the assigned textbook

4. pop a video into the vcr while ensuring #1 and #2 don't occur

the only exception are math teachers, and even then, prior to hs, it's fairly tedious. teach for half hour once a week and assign dittos with problems the rest of the time.

This is just untrue. They go in to the office under 200 days a year, when you factor in summer, every weekend off, and every minor holiday off. You probably work from home 1/2 day a month.

well, if you think they're overpaid, why don't you teach then? i'm sure you are far more intelligent than the average teacher and won't have problem getting a teaching job.

there are reasons why you chose law ..

Listen I'm not saying being a teacher is some perfect, wonderful job. All jobs have their crappy parts, teachers not least among them.

And when there's no good reason at all for them to go in, there aren't principals roaming around the hallways privately seething about all the lazy teachers who didn't come into work.

And they consider having to do any work once they actually do get home to be a bigger affront against them than raping their dog, as evidenced by every teacher who bitches constantly about "grading papers" for half an hour every other week.

SO fucking true. My cousin in law started her teaching job about a year after I graduated law school. She started to complain about how much she worked -- "Being a teacher is hard you know, you don't actually leave at 3. I often stay until 4 or 4:30 woking on lesson plans." I all but laughed out loud.

a classmates of mine was a junior-high school teacher and he said the morale was so low and so many teachers hate their jobs .... people congrat'ed him for leaving the job and go to law school.

The morale is low because the pay is generally not very good, respect for teachers in the general community continues to decline, and because I don't doubt that it can be a crappy and unfulfilling environment while you are actually working.

But the morale is most certainly not low because they work too hard.

I'm sure this is true too. Junior high would be the worst to teach, bar none. Many kids that age are awful little people.

this girl teaches young kids. She has the kind of personality that's well-suited for that job.

Why don't you all stop whining and go become teachers if it's such a great job?

I agree it's easy money for slackers who want to float by in life. i.e. They can come in at 8:30 and leave at 3:30 when the students leave and make good money. On the other hand, there are some teachers who work hard preparing lesson plans and doing what they can to help their students. Unfortunately, both types of teachers get paid the same amount.
