i.e. directly contacting people (former summer students/articling students) from firms to ask about their firm/experience? And to state that you contacted such people on your cover letter? Is this very important in getting an interview?

1) Not important at all unless the person is in a position to make a strong reccomendation and have it heard (so key partners or members of the hiring committee).

2) No. You don't know if the letter reader knows that person and/or likes them.

3) Not very important. There is a typical manner by which large firms staff out their programs (OCI), so going outside of that is a bit odd.

This advice chances a bit for lateral candidates.

Re. #3: why does my Career Center say that it's good to state "I met ___ at x Career Fair/networking event and their enthusiasm for __ convinced me to apply to your firm" even if you only had a 5 mins. convo with such person and there's a 0.001% chance they'll remember you? It still makes it more personalized/communicates interest? I'm not sure if I should email individual people from firms and try to communicate interest (I attend a Canadian law school and our OCI deadline is a bit later than Americans.)

In my experience, the letters are ignored in favor of your credentials.

That's what I figure. Unless I have a strong connection with an important person in the firm (i.e. family member is a partner, or something...) it probably doesn't make much of a difference.

it helps show you have an interest in that firm, it makes very little difference though
